About the company

AT&T sells mobile phone plans and home internet to households and businesses across the US, and runs a wireless business in Mexico. Its business rests on two networks: a nationwide 5G wireless network and a fiber internet network that is replacing its old copper phone lines. Companies and government agencies also buy private networks, security and connectivity services from its business unit. Most revenue comes from monthly service plans plus device installment payments, and the company pushes customers to combine phone and home internet. AT&T Inc. began in 1983 as Southwestern Bell, took the AT&T name after buying its former parent in 2005, and is based in Dallas, Texas.

What believers are saying

  • Fiber is AT&T's main growth bet: it targets over 40 million fiber locations by December 2026.
  • Fiber growth includes acquisitions: AT&T's February 2026 purchase of Lumen's consumer fiber unit added over 1 million customers.
  • AT&T is investing in offices: a $1.35 billion Plano campus, announced January 2026, will house nearly 6,000 staff.

What critics are saying

  • Debt stays high for years: AT&T expects about three years after its EchoStar purchase to restore its 2.5x debt target.
  • The workforce is shrinking: AT&T's headcount fell from about 141,000 to 133,000 in the year to December 2025.
  • FirstNet depends on Washington: a federal authority oversees AT&T's first-responder contract and needs renewal from Congress.

What makes AT&T unique

  • AT&T runs the national first-responder network: its FirstNet federal contract lasts until 2042.
  • AT&T bought more airwaves in July 2026: its $23 billion EchoStar deal added spectrum across about 400 markets.
  • AT&T sells phone and home internet together: 42.5% of its advanced internet homes also used AT&T wireless.

AT&T CEO downplays SpaceX spectrum threat as Q3 revenue rises 5.3% to $32.3B

AT&T chief executive John Stankey told analysts investors shouldn't "over-rotate" on SpaceX's plan to become a US mobile carrier. SpaceX is buying a block of low-band spectrum to turn Starlink into a carrier. Stankey said AT&T runs six to eight carriers of low-band spectrum in a typical metro area. He noted 40% to 45% of mobile traffic in a city such as Chicago starts indoors, where satellite signals struggle. He called low-Earth-orbit satellites "fantastic" for rural areas. AT&T's third-quarter revenue rose 5.3% to $32.3 billion, with adjusted earnings per share of $0.65. It raised its 2026 adjusted EPS outlook to about $2.40 and expects at least $18 billion in free cash flow. Shares fell over 4% in morning trade.

AT&T shares fall 5%, wiping out $8B, despite earnings beat and raised EPS outlook

AT&T shares fell about 5% before the market opened on October 21, erasing roughly $8 billion of value, even after the company beat third-quarter earnings and raised its 2026 adjusted earnings per share (EPS) outlook to about $2.40, from $2.25 to $2.35. Adjusted EPS was $0.65, against a $0.60 consensus estimate. Revenue rose 5.3% to $32.3 billion, and free cash flow reached $5.0 billion. Investors appear to have focused on wireless. AT&T added 379,000 postpaid phone subscribers, in line with forecasts but down from 432,000 in the second quarter, while churn rose to 0.92% from 0.86%. SpaceX's push into US wireless also weighs on the stock. Verizon reports on October 26 and T-Mobile on October 28.

AT&T Q3 revenue rises 5.3% to $32.3B as it adds 769K internet customers and lowers capex outlook

AT&T reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $32.3 billion, up 5.3% year over year, as it added more than 1 million Advanced Connectivity customers for a second consecutive quarter. Internet net adds hit a record 769,000, including 442,000 fiber and 327,000 fixed wireless. Postpaid phone net adds were 379,000. Adjusted EBITDA rose 5.4% to $12.5 billion, and free cash flow was $5.0 billion. Net income from continuing operations fell to $1.3 billion from $9.7 billion a year earlier, which included a gain on the DIRECTV sale. A $2.6 billion non-cash impairment on its Mexico wireless business, which it agreed to sell, also weighed on results. AT&T raised its 2026 adjusted earnings per share outlook to about $2.40 and lowered its long-term capital investment outlook. It remains on track to reach more than 60 million fiber locations by the end of 2030.
