Requirements
  • A Master’s Degree is required.
  • National Board Certification as a Primary Care or Family Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform complete histories and physicals and document them in the medical record.
  • Order and collect data using appropriate assessment techniques, relevant supporting diagnostic information, and diagnostic procedures where indicated.
  • Serve as the first responder for nursing and house staff when patient status changes, orders, or procedural and resuscitative interventions are required.
  • Assess risks associated with the care of acute and complex chronically ill patients, including medication side effects, immobility, impaired nutrition, fluid and electrolyte imbalance, immunocompetence, invasive interventions, and diagnostic procedures.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary health care team to diagnose acute and complex chronic conditions.
  • Manage diagnostic tests through ordering, interpretation, performance, and supervision.
  • Formulate differential diagnoses by priority.
  • Diagnose complications and order appropriate interventions.
  • Identify expected outcomes from diagnoses and formulate and document plans of care for complex acute and chronic health care needs.
  • Use evidence-based practice guidelines and protocols in individualized, dynamic plans of care across the continuum.
  • Implement and modify plans of care.
  • Prescribe diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions.
  • Perform advanced procedures consistent with privileges and competency validation when applicable.
  • Document or dictate key components of patient progress through daily progress notes, transfer and discharge summaries, clinic notes, histories and physicals, plans of care, problem lists, procedure notes, acute event notes, and death summaries in the medical record.
  • Maintain timely documentation that meets acute care compliance standards and captures patient acuity.
  • Maintain ongoing communication and collaboration with the interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Facilitate communication with patients, families, and staff to promote continuity of care across inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Demonstrate professional practice behaviors, including precepting and mentoring and educating and instructing graduate students.
  • Seek opportunities for active engagement in research and analysis of evidence-based practice.
  • Participate in Advanced Practice Grand Rounds and specialty-specific meetings.
  • Maintain continuing education units and membership in a professional organization.
