About the company

ICEYE builds and operates the world’s largest synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite constellation to monitor the Earth continuously, day or night and in any weather. Its SAR satellites capture radar imagery that can see through clouds and darkness, giving customers in defence and intelligence, insurance, emergency management, and environmental monitoring a persistent view of wide areas. Images and analytics are delivered from a network of satellites and, increasingly, sovereign constellations that governments can operate themselves. ICEYE plans to scale up production toward about 100 satellites per year by 2028 and has pursued large funding rounds to expand capacity and sovereign delivery, aiming to grow its revenue and backlog while offering reliable, near-real-time Earth observation data.

Rheinmetall takes to space: new SAR satellite production begins.

Rheinmetall takes to space: new SAR satellite production begins. Oct 7, 2026 Rheinmetall expands into space: A new era of defense technology. Rheinmetall, a prominent player in the defense sector, has recently embarked on an ambitious journey into the realm of space technology. The company has announced the commencement of serial production of satellites in Neuss, marking a significant milestone in its expansion strategy. This move not only diversifies Rheinmetall's portfolio but also positions it to compete in the burgeoning space market. The dawn of Rheinmetall's space venture. The venture into space comes as Rheinmetall partners with the Finnish company ICEYE to produce approximately 50 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites annually. This partnership sees Rheinmetall holding a 60% stake in the joint venture, emphasizing its commitment to establish a footing in the satellite manufacturing industry. The SAR technology utilized in these satellites boasts the capability to capture high-resolution images regardless of weather conditions or time of day, making it invaluable for military applications. A multi-billion euro contract with the Bundeswehr. An essential aspect of this venture is the lucrative contract Rheinmetall secured with the German military (Bundeswehr). With an agreement valued at €1.7 billion, this contract ensures exclusive access to a portion of the newly produced satellites, which will greatly enhance the Bundeswehr's reconnaissance capabilities. Currently, there are 35 ICEYE SAR satellites in orbit, aiding not only the Bundeswehr but also the Ukrainian military. Key features of the SAR satellites. The upcoming satellites will feature impressive specifications, measuring 3.3 meters in length and 0.8 meters in width, weighing approximately 220 kilograms. The first of these satellites is scheduled for launch in early 2027, utilizing a SpaceX rocket to reach orbit. Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger noted that this successful production initiation in Neuss demonstrates their ability to provide innovative space technology at scale within Germany. The strategic importance of SAR technology. According to experts, SAR technology is becoming increasingly indispensable for modern military operations. As Juliana Süß from the Foundation for Science and Politics points out, in contemporary warfare, having persistent and detailed situational awareness is crucial. The acquisition of additional SAR satellites will enhance the Bundeswehr's capabilities significantly, providing crucial intelligence on enemy troop movements and equipment. Competing in a competitive landscape. As Rheinmetall ventures into space, it steps into a competitive arena that includes industry giants such as Airbus Defence and Space and OHB System AG. The German defense contractor aims to diversify its offerings beyond traditional military hardware like artillery, tanks, and ammunition, now encompassing naval vessels, aircraft components, and UAVs. This broad strategy is designed to meet the varied needs of NATO forces while strengthening European defense collaborations. Recent performance of Rheinmetall stock. Despite these ambitious moves, Rheinmetall's stock has faced challenges, shedding over half its value since January 2022. Market dynamics shifted significantly following the onset of the Ukraine crisis, leading to a reevaluation of defense stocks. While the broader market shows signs of recovery, including a rise in the DAX index, Rheinmetall remains the weakest performer among its peers. Conclusion: A new horizon for Rheinmetall. Rheinmetall's entry into the satellite manufacturing sector underscores the evolution of modern defense strategies. With significant contracts and technological advancements on the horizon, the company aims to not only enhance national security but also reshape the defense landscape. As they prepare to launch their satellites into orbit, all eyes will be on Rheinmetall to see how well it adapts to this new frontier - one where terrestrial and extraterrestrial capabilities increasingly converge.
