Responsibilities
  • Assess, prepare, dispense, and help coordinate day-to-day pharmacy dispensing functions accurately and promptly.
  • Review medication orders to ensure safe and effective therapy, including evaluating dose, route, formulation, allergies, interactions, and monitoring needs.
  • Communicate frequently with healthcare professionals as a drug-information resource and provide educational information to support patient care.
  • Report adverse drug events and medication safety events, and document interventions in the medical record.
  • Work with the pharmacy team on daily operations and additional tasks or projects that support departmental goals.
  • Assist with technician and student supervision and direction for day-to-day dispensing functions, tasks, and duties.
  • Prioritize day-to-day workflow according to immediate needs and changing workload.
  • Review and interpret prescribers’ orders, determine appropriateness of therapy, and prepare and dispense medications.
  • Prepare sterile admixtures using proper aseptic technique and prepare chemotherapy according to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Answer questions from physicians and nurses.
  • Serve as a primary or co-preceptor for College of Pharmacy rotational students and provide formal, in-depth training to students and new staff.
  • Serve as the primary trainer for newly onboarded employees.
  • Develop educational materials and staff-development in-services.
  • Direct, advise, and instruct staff in assigned areas on job duties and functions.
  • Assist leadership with pharmacy operations in the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Serve as a liaison between the pharmacy service line and the assigned practice area.
  • Correct problems involving medication use or normal pharmacy operations.
  • Promote a safe working environment by following the UAMS patient safety plan and ensuring compliance with policies.
  • Follow pharmacy laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Ensure pharmacy equipment and facilities are used, calibrated, and maintained properly, including Baxa, KitCheck, and Pyxis; complete and document assigned cleaning duties.
  • Work with leadership on quality-improvement projects and provide input on new initiatives.
  • Learn new processes promptly to help train other staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Pharmacist I preferred qualifications include graduation from an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy with a Pharm.D. and two years of applicable pharmacy experience.

White coat ceremony marks next step in College of Nursing students' education. By Chris Carmody Oct. 8, 2026 | The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Nursing held a white coat ceremony Oct. 2 at the First Pentecostal Church in North Little Rock, welcoming more than 150 students to the clinical phase of their education. The ceremony honored students from the College of Nursing's undergraduate and graduate programs. Sarah Rhoads, Ph.D., DNP, dean of the College of Nursing, said the annual event is a momentous occasion for the students, for their family and friends, and for the college. Rhoads shared a recent experience that occurred while she was attending the ribbon-cutting for the new UAMS Health hospital in Bryant. She said a physician approached her to praise the skill and accomplishments of nurses who graduate from UAMS. "That just makes me so proud," she said. "Each of you is an ambassador for the UAMS College of Nursing through your interactions while you're in the program and as you proceed in your career." Rhoads urged the students to provide patient- and family-centered care, study to deepen their professional understanding, and build in time for self-care. Elizabeth Riley, DNP, APRN, executive director of undergraduate programs in the College of Nursing, spoke about the importance of white coat ceremonies, which emphasize compassionate, collaborative, and scientifically excellent care. "Here at the College of Nursing, it marks a meaningful transition from the skills of the simulation lab to the work of providing real patient care," she said. Kiersten Williams, president of the College of Nursing's Student Nurses Association, led a recitation of the Nightingale Pledge, another signal of the transition to clinical practice. The pledge affirms the students' dedication to maintaining professional standards and promoting the health and happiness of their patients. After the students donned their white coats, Albrey Love, DNP, APRN, spoke to them about the impact that nurses have in the lives of patients and their families. Love, the College of Nursing's executive director of graduate programs, recounted the day she had to say goodbye to her father, who died in 2021 after contracting COVID-19 and experiencing a stroke. "I don't remember many details of that day, but there's one person I'll never forget - his nurse," she said. Although the nurse was only with him for a day before he was placed on a ventilator, she had taken the time to learn about his career and his family. She even knew which way he preferred to part his hair, Love said. "Nursing will ask a lot of you," she told the students. "There will always be another patient, another task, another chart. But I hope you're never so busy that you forget to notice the person in front of you, the teammates beside you, and your own needs, as well." UAMS, Bradley County Medical Center to sign management advising and co-branding agreement. By Yavonda Chase Sept. 25, 2026 | LITTLE ROCK - The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and Bradley County Medical Center (BCMC) in Warren are planning to sign a management consulting and co-branding agreement. The agreement was approved Thursday by the BCMC Board of Directors. Under the agreement, BCMC will retain its assets, operations, and oversight of the hospital. No changes to patient services, hospital staff, or daily operations will result from the agreement. BCMC retains full operational authority. Under the agreement, UAMS will provide advisory management services across key operational areas and assist the hospital in identifying opportunities to improve daily operations. UAMS, the state's only academic health system, and BCMC have worked together for many years. BCMC is a participating hospital in UAMS's Stroke Program, which provides telehealth consults with UAMS neurologists so that hospitals around the state can offer lifesaving ischemic stroke treatment. "At UAMS, we believe every Arkansan should have access to outstanding healthcare in their own community," said UAMS Chancellor C. Lowry Barnes, M.D. "Through this management services agreement with Bradley County Medical Center, we are strengthening our efforts to improve health outcomes in South Arkansas by supporting the hospital with advisory services and expert recommendations." "This partnership with UAMS represents an important step forward in our efforts to improve healthcare access across South Arkansas," said Leslie Huitt, CEO and CFO of BCMC. "Through this agreement, UAMS will provide management advising and bring the strength of the UAMS brand to help us meet the evolving needs of our patients and create new opportunities to enhance care for the communities we serve." This year, UAMS announced co-management agreements with Helena Hospital and Mena Regional Health System as well as a strategic partnership with Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff. On Oct. 1, UAMS Health will open a 53-bed hospital in Saline County. About BCMC Marking 75 years of dedicated community service, BCMC is a 33-bed, critical access hospital located in Warren, Arkansas, serving Bradley County and the surrounding counties. It features 25 acute care beds alongside a specialized eight-bed Senior Care Unit, which offers a structured, inpatient psychiatric program dedicated to helping adults aged 60 and older navigate behavioral or emotional challenges. Hematologist Tamer Hellou, M.D., joins UAMS Myeloma Center. By Nathan Tidwell Sept. 22, 2026 | Hematologist Tamer Hellou, M.D., has joined the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute's Myeloma Center. Hellou comes to UAMS from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he spent the past two years on a fellowship in advanced hematology, specializing in plasma cell disorders, including amyloidosis, multiple myeloma, and Waldenstrom Macroglobulinemia. He began his educational and healthcare career in Israel, earning his medical degree from Bar Ilan University, followed by an internship at Rabin Medical Center, four years of internal medicine residency at Samson Assuta Ashdod University Hospital, and a three-year hematology fellowship at Sheba Medical Center. "Dr. Hellou is an outstanding addition to our team, and we are excited to have him at UAMS," said Frits van Rhee, M.D., Ph.D., clinical director for the Myeloma Center. UAMS to host Artificial Intelligence Conference in october. By News Staff Sept. 21, 2026 | LITTLE ROCK - The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is hosting the Third Annual Innovations in Artificial Intelligence Conference on Oct. 8-9, focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) applications to research, clinics, and clinical education environments. A preconference event will be held from noon to 5 p.m., on Thursday, Oct. 8, in the Walton Auditorium on the 10th floor of the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, 449 Jack Stephens Drive, on the main UAMS campus in Little Rock. The conference will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, in the same location. The free conference is open to anyone with an interest in AI and healthcare, including members of the public. Sessions will examine the evolving role and impact of AI within academic health centers, with emphasis across the clinical, research, and educational missions. "Artificial intelligence will not replace the human judgment, compassion, and curiosity at the heart of healthcare. It can, however, help us deliver care more effectively, prepare health professionals more thoughtfully, and accelerate discovery if we pair innovation with evidence, ethics, and accountability," said Wendy Ward, Ph.D., associate provost for faculty in the Division of Academic Affairs. The conference is hosted by the UAMS Interprofessional Faculty Development Department, the UAMS Office of Interprofessional Education (IPE), the UAMS Creativity Hub for Artificial Intelligence in Health (CHAI) housed in the College of Medicine's Department of Biomedical Informatics, the College of Medicine's Department of Humanities and Bioethics, and the Arkansas Geriatric Collaborative (AGEC). UAMS celebrates opening of Multiple Sclerosis clinic in Fayetteville. By Andrew Vogler Sept. 18, 2026 | FAYETTEVILLE - The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Sept. 18 to celebrate the opening of the UAMS Health MS Clinic, located at the UAMS Northwest Regional Campus in Fayetteville. "UAMS is committed to expanding specialized care throughout the state, and with the opening of the new multiple sclerosis clinic, people in Northwest Arkansas living with MS can now receive treatment from neurologists who specialize in that disease - without leaving the region," said UAMS Chancellor C. Lowry Barnes, M.D. "I am also inspired by the efforts that have made this clinic possible, especially through the professional guidance of Dr. Rohit Dhall and Dr. Lee Archer, and through the philanthropy of Jo and Scott Rampy." Located at 1125 N. College Ave., the clinic will be under the supervision of Robert "Lee" Archer, M.D., professor of neurology in the UAMS Department of Neurology. "In the UAMS Department of Neurology, we have some of the foremost experts in treating neurological disorders such as MS, and leading this clinic is Dr. Lee Archer," said Rohit Dhall, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Neurology. "Further, in our mission to deliver high-quality care and advance MS research, we have had steadfast support from the Rampy MS Research Foundation, under the leadership and bravery of Jo and Scott Rampy. We are honored and grateful for their continued commitment towards UAMS' research and treatment of MS." The Rampy Multiple Sclerosis Research Foundation, created by Jo and Scott Rampy, made a $100,000 gift to the UAMS Department of Neurology to help open the clinic. The funds for the gift were raised through the nonprofit's nationwide network of supporters. "I am very thankful to the UAMS Northwest Regional Campus staff for all their diligent work getting the clinic up and running, ensuring we are able to provide world-class care," said Ryan Cork, MSHA, vice chancellor for the Northwest Arkansas Region. "This is an exciting development for the Northwest Arkansas community, and we are very grateful for partners like the Rampy Foundation." It was Jo Rampy's diagnosis with MS that was the catalyst for the couple's advocacy for MS research and the creation of the Rampy MS Research Foundation in 2012. The foundation organizes several fundraisers, including its premier event Trifest for MS, an annual triathlon in Bentonville, Arkansas, and the annual Run the Check event in which runners and walkers raise money while relaying a donation check from Bentonville to Little Rock. In addition to UAMS, the foundation has donated to Northwestern University in Chicago and University of California, San Francisco. Since its creation, the foundation has raised over $1 million. "We are beyond excited by the opening of this clinic because it is a goal of the Rampy Foundation to create better accessibility for MS patients, and this opening certainly strengthens the statewide network of MS clinical care," said Scott Rampy, president and chief advancement officer for the Rampy MS Research Foundation. "Also, we don't consider the clinic a conclusion of our efforts, we believe it is a step that accelerates MS research and clinical care in Arkansas and beyond."
