About the job

Requirements
  • Are pursuing a degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Have some exposure to computer-aided design (CAD) and basic controls or embedded work, through class projects, personal builds, or prior internships.
  • Have hands-on experience with rapid prototyping, machining, microcontrollers, or simple test rigs.
  • Work well in small, collaborative teams without needing much day-to-day mentorship.
Responsibilities
  • Build and iterate on prototyping rigs, including mechanical assembly, wiring, and basic controls integration.
  • Take on lower-level controls tasks, including sensor wiring, calibration, and simple test scripts, to free up controls and mechanical engineers for deeper domain work.
  • Support mechanical design tasks as needed, including CAD iteration, fixture design, and fit checks.
  • Bridge mechanical and controls as the product matures by running reliability and test-rig cycles, troubleshooting integration issues, and translating mechanical design changes into controls adjustments.
  • Explore mechanistic interpretability on the models behind LeLamp’s character and behavior, using techniques such as probing and activation analysis to understand why the agent responds as it does.
  • Help spot and characterize behavior that was not designed for, especially as people interact with LeLamp in unexpected ways.
  • Document test results and communicate issues clearly to the team.
Desired Qualifications
  • Have exposure to mechanistic interpretability or model-internals work, such as probing, activation patching, sparse autoencoders, or similar techniques.

About the company

Human Computer Lab builds expressive, character-driven robots for everyday home use, focusing on emotionally resonant devices rather than purely functional machines. Their first product, LeLamp, is an open-source robotic lamp that can look toward a user’s point, respond to voice, and perform playful gestures, turning a common object into a social partner. They differentiate themselves by prioritizing human–computer interaction and character in everyday objects, with an approach that starts small (the “iPod of robotics”) before expanding to broader consumer robotics. Their goal is to bring robotics into homes through engaging, familiar devices and to develop a scalable platform for a new generation of home robotics.

What believers are saying

  • LeLamp has active preorders and plans broader pilots in mid-late 2026.
  • South Park Commons spotlighting at its July 2026 Demo Faire validates investor and talent interest.
  • The company is recruiting robotics, electrical, industrial-design, and controls talent across North America.

What critics are saying

  • LeLamp remains early development; GitHub shows no releases and hobbyist-kit beta timing slips.
  • Big incumbents like Apple research, Samsung Ballie, Amazon Astro, and 1X crowd the category.
  • No clear revenue engine exists beyond preorders; a missed 2026 launch kills momentum.

What makes Human Computer Lab unique

  • Shahvir Sarkary frames home robotics as an interface problem, not humanoid labor.
  • LeLamp blends expressive motion, voice response, and open-source hardware around Apple ELEGNT.
  • Human Computer Lab targets emotionally resonant companion robots before scaling to broader home platforms.
