About the job

Requirements
  • Deep payments and ledger experience, including designing or substantially rebuilding a production financial ledger and knowledge of journal design, posting models, balance consistency, and correction strategies.
  • Hands-on experience with card scheme integrations, ideally Mastercard, issuer processing, authorisation flows, clearing files, and disputes.
  • Production coding experience at scale, with work behind systems handling real traffic and money.
  • Ability to work across system-level and field-level design, including distributed settlement flows and amount-field type and precision.
  • Experience with regulated environments, including safeguarding and customer fund segregation, payment and e-money licensing, data residency, auditability, and technology risk requirements; experience with MAS and other Asia Pacific regulators is ideal.
  • Experience building systems operating across several countries, currencies, and regulators.
  • Ability to produce clear, structured, opinionated documentation that remains useful over time.
  • Ability to explain and defend positions on design patterns, standards, and trade-offs to audiences ranging from new graduates to the board.
  • Ability to evaluate vendor recommendations critically and support conclusions with evidence.
Responsibilities
  • Own architectural direction for end-to-end money movement across multi-currency wallets and balances, the core ledger, card issuing and authorisation, in-app foreign exchange, overseas transfers and payouts, treasury and pre-funding, settlement and reconciliation, and shared platform services for YouTrip and YouBiz across all markets.
  • Define ledger architecture, including double-entry design, chart of accounts, sub-ledger boundaries, immutability and correction rules, multi-currency representation, precision and rounding policy, and balance derivation or storage. Define handling of authorisation holds, reversals, partial and incremental captures, refunds, foreign-exchange revaluation, and unreconciled positions, and explain and defend decisions to Finance, auditors, and regulators.
  • Design money-movement correctness through idempotency, exactly-once outcomes over at-least-once messaging, transaction state machines, and failure, retry, timeout, and compensation paths. Document and own outcomes for cases where a partner succeeds but the company fails.
  • Design card issuing architecture for authorisation, clearing, and settlement as a Mastercard Principal Member, including real-time authorisation on the scheme's critical path, stand-in processing, authorisation expiry, disputes and chargebacks, Apple Pay and Google Pay tokenisation, virtual and physical card lifecycle, and latency and availability targets.
  • Design foreign-exchange and multi-currency wallet systems, including rate sourcing, quoting and rate locking, spread and exposure management, in-app exchange across wallet currencies, and pre-funding and liquidity models.
  • Design cross-border transfer corridors and payout rail integrations, including local real-time rails, bank transfers, SWIFT and partner networks, pre-funding and nostro design, and sanctions and anti-money-laundering screening as core design constraints.
  • Design reconciliation and settlement systems that minimize breaks, identify them within minutes, and trace causes across time zones, currencies, and partners.
  • Set measurable non-functional targets for latency, throughput, availability, and cost; document where eventual consistency is acceptable; and build in recovery, replay, and backfill capabilities.
  • Set engineering and coding standards, conduct architecture reviews for significant changes, maintain architecture documentation and decision records, and document reasoning and rejected options.
  • Evaluate and oversee card processors, scheme connectivity, banking and settlement partners, foreign-exchange liquidity providers, payout partners, know-your-customer and screening vendors, and core infrastructure, including their failure modes.
  • Mentor tech leads and senior engineers, lead through influence, and as the function matures, build and lead a small architecture group.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with Golang, event-driven architectures, and cloud-native infrastructure.

Singapore-Based Fintech Youtrip Picks Up $50M Led By Lightspeed

YouTrip, a Singapore-based fintech that offers multi-currency wallet for consumers and business accounts with corporate cards for SMEs, has its eyes on growth throughout Southeast Asia after landing a Series B led by Lightspeed. The round was $50 million, and brings YouTrip’s total raised to $100 million since it launched in 2018.The new funding will be used to develop YouTrip’s product technology and hire more than 100 new positions for its regional team as it launches in new Southeast Asian markets, including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam. The company is a Major Payment Institution licensed by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, and its services include payments, foreign exchange, remittances and cards.Since its inception five years ago, YouTrip has processed close to $10 billion USD in annualized transaction volume and its e-commerce payment volume has grown 238% in annualized transaction volume since its Series A in 2021.TechCrunch last covered YouTrip in November 2021, when it raised a $30 million Series A led by prominent family offices in Asia who wanted to be unnamed, but were returning investors. Chu tells TechCrunch that YouTrip’s backing by family offices gave it an advantage, because those relationships tend to be very long-term. This time YouTrip made the decision to work with a venture backed company. At the time of our last conversation with Chu two years ago, YouTrip was recovering from the pandemic as travel resumed in Southeast Asia, especially Singapore. It was also preparing for the launch of YouBiz, its corporate card, as more SMBs adopted digital financial services
