Requirements
  • For New Jersey positions, certification is required upon hire.
  • For Pennsylvania positions, certification is required upon hire unless the candidate is a new graduate; a new graduate must obtain certification within six months of the hiring date.
  • An acceptable certification is National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) certification or National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) certification.
  • The role requires the physical ability to stand for up to eight hours per day, walk for up to eight to ten hours per day, use manual dexterity continuously, lift and carry objects up to 25 pounds, frequently push objects weighing more than 100 pounds, stoop and bend, reach above shoulder level, move and respond quickly, and meet the specified hearing, vision, depth-perception, and visual-monotony requirements.
  • The application must use the candidate's full legal name and current home address and include employment history for the past seven years.
Responsibilities
  • Check the supplies and equipment needed for each surgical procedure.
  • Scrub, gown, and glove self and members of the surgical team.
  • Set up the sterile table with the instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications or solutions needed for the procedure and ensure they are in good working condition.
  • Perform the appropriate counts with the circulator before the operation and before the incision is closed.
  • Assist with draping the sterile field.
  • Pass instruments, retractors, sutures, and other items to the surgeon during the procedure.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
  • Maintain the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
  • Handle surgical specimens appropriately and safely.
  • Handle sharps and medications according to operating-room safety policies.
Desired Qualifications
  • Complete on-the-job training consisting of a minimum of one and a half years, including an eight-week concentrated orientation period.
