About the company

GitHub runs a code hosting and collaboration platform for developers and software teams, from public open source projects to private business applications. Teams store projects in repositories, propose changes through pull requests, and review code before merging it into a shared version. GitHub Actions automates tests and deployments, while Copilot assists with writing code and Advanced Security checks for vulnerabilities and exposed credentials. The company earns revenue from paid team and enterprise subscriptions, AI coding plans, security add-ons, and usage of its development tools. Founded in 2008 and headquartered in San Francisco, GitHub is a subsidiary of Microsoft.

  • Demand outruns infrastructure: GitHub's August 2026 capacity failure disrupted multiple services for seven hours and 47 minutes.
  • On-call engineers face extended response work: GitHub's August 2026 Copilot status incident lasted over ten hours.

What makes GitHub unique

  • Developer distribution is unusually broad: GitHub reports more than 225 million developers on its platform.
  • Maintainers get funding beside their code: GitHub Sponsors routes financial support directly through project pages.
  • GitHub preserves software beyond online hosting: its Arctic vault uses film designed to last 1,000 years.

New Relic brings observability into GitHub Copilot, tracking AI code deployments

New Relic has launched integrations for GitHub Copilot that bring its observability data into developers' workflows, so engineers no longer need to log into a dashboard or leave GitHub. The company announced them October 28, 2026, at GitHub Universe in San Francisco. Change Tracking for GitHub Copilot, now in public preview, runs pre-merge checks and post-deployment canary and regression checks against real-time performance data. It routes regressions to GitHub Issues and Copilot for fixes, and sends updates to Slack. The company cited its 2026 State of AI Coding report: 94% of leaders rated AI-generated code as higher quality at review, yet 78% reported more incidents after deployment. Autopilot for GitHub MCP Server and the open source Preflight for GitHub Copilot are generally available. Preflight shows how efficiently developers use coding agents.

GitHub adds four million CPU cores to handle AI agent surge after 7.4B commits

GitHub is adding four million CPU cores and 160 petabytes of high-speed storage to cope with surging demand from AI agents. The company announced the plan at its Universe conference in San Francisco. It recorded 7.4 billion code commits in September 2026, five times the level a year earlier. The surge caused repeated outages, and on May 7 the site's 90-day availability fell to about 84%. GitHub is also separating compute from storage, which it expects to deliver 35 times more throughput. It will finish migrating to a multi-region deployment in Azure early next year. It also made Copilot Fusion, a model routing service, generally available, and extended Copilot access to all GitHub Enterprise users without extra per-seat fees. Customers still pay for the tokens they use.

17a-4 DataParser Hub lets clients feed proprietary content into Microsoft Purview and Copilot

17a-4 LLC has added an API to its DataParser Hub that lets clients send proprietary content into Microsoft Purview and Copilot. The New York company announced the feature on October 21, 2026. DataParser already captures more than 30 types of messaging and collaboration data, including Slack, Webex, Symphony, and Zoom. Some clients also hold custom content, such as JSON exports from agentic AI, that no standard connector covers. The new API offers a formatted schema for ingestion, so clients need not build their own M365 integrations. Data sent to Hub can appear in Outlook, be available to Purview's Communications Compliance and eDiscovery, and feed into Copilot. Clients can also store it in Azure Blob. Output can tie into a client's Active Directory, and metadata can flag data type or classification.

KillSwitch, an esoteric programming language built to confuse LLMs, tops out at 66.8% in AI tests

Software engineer Dominik Picheta has built KillSwitch, an open-source programming language designed to confuse large language models (LLMs). Picheta is a senior software engineer at Cloudflare and a core developer of the Nim language. The language uses adverbs as identifiers, and calling one requires an anagram of it. Most text in a program is ignored by the interpreter, while phrases such as "ignore previous instructions" call functions. The spec document also contains deliberate lies to mislead models that scrape it. Picheta tested several major models. The best scored 66.8% on KillSwitch coding tasks, while most struggled to pass 50%. He does not believe even that score shows the models understand the code. KillSwitch is available on GitHub.

Open source RemoveMacAI tool strips Apple Intelligence from macOS, frees up 12GB storage

A new open-source tool called RemoveMacAI allows users to completely remove Apple Intelligence from macOS and reclaim up to 12GB of storage space. Created by Om Lahorey, the tool emerged after Apple made it nearly impossible to fully disable AI features in macOS 27, with settings scattered across multiple locations. RemoveMacAI eliminates Siri AI, ChatGPT extensions, Genmoji, writing suggestions, notification summaries, and automatic photo clean-up. It works by installing a configuration profile using Apple's own restriction keys and removing models through Apple's asset service. The tool has gained over 1,500 stars on GitHub. Users can install it via Homebrew or a curl command, disable features selectively or completely, and revert changes if needed. Apple System Integrity Protection remains enabled, and dictation continues functioning. However, future macOS updates might break the tool's functionality.
