About the company

Navantia designs and builds naval vessels and defense systems for navies, and manufactures offshore energy infrastructure for wind developers. Its work spans surface ships and submarines, alongside the foundations and substations that support offshore wind farms. The company combines vessel engineering with onboard systems, while its shipyards also repair commercial ships and modernize naval fleets. It earns revenue through construction and equipment contracts and through maintenance, upgrades and support over the working lives of ships and their systems. Navantia was established as a standalone shipbuilding group in 2005 and is headquartered in Madrid, Spain.

What believers are saying

  • Company-requested moves receive support: Navantia's parent careers package lists relocation allowances.
  • UK apprentices combine paid working hours with college study and nationally recognised qualifications.
  • International engineering spans partner systems: Navantia and SAGE Automation jointly developed Australia's ship platform controls.

What critics are saying

  • UK contract exposure is concentrated: the Fleet Solid Support supply-ship programme is Navantia UK's main contract.
  • Submarine engineers face certification gates: Navantia requires independent safety audits at every construction and testing milestone.
  • UK apprentice recruitment follows intake windows: 2026 applications are closed, with applications reopening early 2027.

What makes Navantia unique

  • Submarine endurance uses fuel chemistry: Navantia's bioethanol reformer generates hydrogen for fuel-cell electricity.
  • Navantia reuses a frigate family across navies: its common design strategy serves Spain, Norway and Australia.
  • Navantia trains customer crews through simulation: its training centre uses virtual reality and immersive environments.
