About the Job

Requirements

  • Ability to autonomously lead, design, and implement backend systems where correctness, consistency, and auditability are first-class requirements.
  • A track record of scaling systems, including taking a pipeline, service, or database that was failing and making it handle 10 times the load.
  • Deep expertise in Postgres and relational data modeling, including consistency guarantees and Postgres behavior at scale.
  • Strong working knowledge of Node.js internals, including the event loop and memory behavior under load.
  • Experience managing complex asynchronous and long-running backend jobs, ideally with a workflow engine such as Temporal.
  • Familiarity with payment providers, idempotency, retries, reconciliation, and money-movement failure modes.
  • A security- and abuse-aware approach to system design.
  • Desire to participate in the entire project development process, from research and planning through implementation and monitoring.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for expressing ideas, designs, and potential solutions in a mostly asynchronous manner.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and scale pipelines that turn raw usage into accurate, real-time billing through metering, aggregation, rating, and invoicing across millions of events.
  • Build payment flows that remain correct under concurrency and partial failure, including idempotent charges, retries, reconciliation, and provider edge-case handling.
  • Develop fraud and abuse detection through signal collection, real-time scoring, and automated mitigation.
  • Scale high-throughput platform systems, including Postgres under heavy write load, Node.js services under pressure, and long-running workflows orchestrated with Temporal.
  • Build TypeScript and GraphQL application programming interfaces with strong correctness and auditability.
  • Write Engineering Requirement Documents from initial idea through defined tasks, implementation, monitoring, and further scaling.
  • Contribute to open-source repositories including the command-line interface, TypeScript software development kit, and Railpack.
  • Participate in on-call rotations from time to time.

Desired Qualifications

  • Direct experience with billing, payments, or fraud.
  • Rust experience or willingness to learn Rust.
  • Experience with payment providers such as Stripe.
  • Experience using a workflow engine such as Temporal.

About the Company

Railway

Cloud app deployment and management platform

Railway provides a cloud-based platform to deploy and manage applications for developers and tech teams, handling development, staging, and production in one place. It automatically configures settings, offers a single dashboard to provision databases (PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, MySQL) and services, and integrates with GitHub for CI/CD. It enables identical cloud environments across team members and supports deploy previews for pull requests to test changes. The goal is to simplify and speed up app deployment and infrastructure management in the cloud.
