What believers are saying

  • March 2026 launched the Lancet maternal risk index across 7.2 million deliveries.
  • June 2026 contracts with Parker Laboratories and The Spare Food Co broaden GPO relevance.
  • CHRISTUS Health cut 13,000 chart reviews using CodingCare, proving workflow savings.

What critics are saying

  • Patient Square ownership removes public-market discipline; missed integration targets stay hidden until 2027.
  • Premier's supply chain moat depends on hospital retention while competitors undercut GPO fees.
  • Loss of hospital members to Vizient or HealthTrust would hollow out Premier's GPO economics.

What makes Premier unique

  • Premier still spans 4,250 hospitals and $86 billion in purchasing scale.
  • Stanson Health embeds AI coding into Epic workflows, unlike standalone analytics vendors.

Premier introduces Prenatal Risk Index to identify severe maternal morbidity risk

Premier, a healthcare technology company, has published a study in The Lancet Regional Health – Americas introducing the maternal Prenatal Risk Index (m-PRI), a new framework for identifying patients at risk for severe maternal morbidity. Developed with the US Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women's Health, the study analysed 7.2 million inpatient delivery hospitalisations from 2016 to 2023 across 864 hospitals in 49 states. The m-PRI weights prenatal risk factors based on their association with mortality-informed severity, unlike traditional approaches that treat all events equally. The index evaluated 46 potential risk factors and incorporated 28 conditions into the final model. It demonstrated stronger predictive performance than existing systems, with 97% of patients experiencing severe maternal morbidity having a nonzero m-PRI score.
