Convenience store showdown: Wawa opens in September, Buc-ee's follows in November.

Convenience store showdown: Wawa opens in September, Buc-ee's follows in November. Aug 24, 2026 at 06:32 pm MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS News) - Buc-ee's and Wawa continue to expand their footprints across Tennessee and beyond, with both convenience-store chains preparing to open new locations in Middle Tennessee. Scroll down for multiple photos. Buc-ee's CEO and co-founder Arch "Beaver" Aplin III recently discussed the company's future growth during the grand opening of a new Buc-ee's in Benton, Arkansas. Aplin indicated the Texas-based company will continue looking for expansion opportunities in states and communities that are business-friendly, while also considering the availability of a strong workforce to staff its massive travel centers. Buc-ee's is known not only for operating some of the largest convenience stores and travel centers in the country, but also for offering wages that tend to be higher than those traditionally associated with gas stations and convenience stores. Many Buc-ee's hourly positions start in the range of $16 to $18 per hour, depending on the job and location, with some positions paying more. Other convenience-store chains known for competitive wages include QuikTrip and Wawa. The expansion battle is becoming particularly noticeable in Rutherford County. Buc-ee's is preparing to open its massive Murfreesboro travel center near the Interstate 24 and Joe B. Jackson Parkway interchange in November. Before that happens, Wawa is scheduled to celebrate the opening of its new Murfreesboro store at 5208 Veterans Parkway on September 10. The Murfreesboro Wawa is part of a much larger push into Middle Tennessee. A newly constructed Wawa at 2424 Tennessee 46 South in Dickson is scheduled to open Wednesday, August 26. Another new store at 1000 Murfreesboro Road in Lebanon is scheduled to open September 2. By the end of 2026, Pennsylvania-based Wawa plans to have as many as seven stores operating across Tennessee. And the company is apparently just getting started. Wawa has announced plans for more than 50 Tennessee locations over the next decade, potentially giving the familiar northeastern convenience-store chain a significant presence across the Volunteer State. Each Wawa typically employs around 35 workers and represents an investment of approximately $8 million. Wawa currently operates 1,231 Wawa stores in the United States. Buc-ee's operates on an entirely different scale. Its travel centers commonly employ between 175 and 250 full- and part-time workers, while some of its largest locations can require several hundred employees to operate their food-service, retail, fueling and car-wash operations. The Murfreesboro Buc-ee's is expected to create hundreds of jobs when it opens. Buc-ee's has nearly 60 (total) store locations in the U.S. The difference in size between the two brands is substantial. Wawa stores are designed around the traditional neighborhood convenience-store model, while Buc-ee's builds sprawling interstate travel destinations with around 120 fuel pumps, extensive food operations and enormous retail areas. Based on their approximate building sizes, around 16 Wawa stores could fit inside a single Buc-ee's travel center like the one being built on Joe B. Jackson Pkwy. Despite their differences, both companies have something important in common: they are betting heavily on growth. Both Buc-ee's and Wawa operate around the clock, 24 hours a day and 365 days a year, and both have expanded well beyond the regions where their brands were first established. For Rutherford County drivers, that growth means two major convenience-store brands will soon have a presence in Murfreesboro. Wawa arrives first in September, followed by the much larger Buc-ee's travel center expected to open in November - giving local motorists considerably more choices when it comes to fuel, food, snacks and road-trip stops. Published Aug 24, 2026 10:50 AM EDT Wawa will install self-branded electric vehicle chargers at eight Pennsylvania stores this year. The convenience store chain announced the expansion on Wednesday through a partnership with Electrify America. Five sites will have both NACS and CCS connectors with charging speeds up to 400 kW. The other three will have CCS chargers capable of reaching 350 kW, C-Store Dive reports. The three 350 kW stations will be at 5900 Bristol Pike in Bristol, 7572 Schantz Road in Allentown, and 1960 John Fries Highway in Quakertown. The five 400 kW stations with dual connectors will be at 8240 West Chester Pike in Upper Darby, 1600 Egypt Road in Phoenixville, 1242 West Baltimore Pike in Media, 164 Maynard Street in Williamsport, and 413 Lancaster Avenue in Reading. Electrify America is providing its white-label charging platform. This lets the retailer run the stations under its own brand while the charging network provides equipment, software, and network support. "By owning Wawa branded chargers, we are always striving to deliver a more seamless, reliable, and consistent experience and this allows us to provide more options throughout 14 states for our customers," said Rich Makin, senior vice president and chief fuel and development officer at the company. Makin described the Pennsylvania rollout as a test of company-owned charging. "The Electrify America white label offering helps retailers establish and operate a charging network that reflects their brand, customer experience and business goals," said Rachel Moses, senior director of sales and marketing for Electrify America. The retailer has more than 280 locations with EV charging across its footprint. The company has been offering EV charging solutions since 2017. The new stations don't replace existing relationships with Tesla and IONNA. The chain launched self-branded Tesla Superchargers earlier this year and also hosts IONNA fast chargers at some locations. The retailer has about 1,100 locations open in eight states: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Florida, North Carolina and Alabama, as well as in Washington, D.C. Wawa to launch branded EV fast chargers at eight Pennsylvania stores.

Wawa to launch branded EV fast chargers at eight Pennsylvania stores. The retailer will use Electrify America's white-label charging platform, with five sites offering up to 400 kW and both NACS and CCS connectors. Prefer on Google Wawa plans to deploy its own branded DC fast-charging stations at eight stores in Pennsylvania this year, expanding the convenience retailer's direct involvement in electric vehicle charging. The company will use Electrify America's white-label charging platform, which provides the charging equipment, software and network support while allowing Wawa to operate the stations under its own brand. Five sites to offer 400 kW charging. Five of the eight planned locations will feature chargers supporting both NACS and CCS connectors, with charging capacity of up to 400 kW. The remaining three sites will use CCS-only chargers capable of delivering up to 350 kW. The actual charging speed available to an individual vehicle will depend on the vehicle's battery and charging system. The 400 kW hardware nevertheless places the new stations among the higher-power public chargers being deployed in the United States. The three CCS-only, 350 kW locations are planned for: * 5900 Bristol Pike, Bristol * 7572 Schantz Road, Allentown * 1960 John Fries Highway, Quakertown The five locations with 400 kW chargers and both NACS and CCS connectors are: * 8240 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby * 1600 Egypt Road, Phoenixville * 1242 West Baltimore Pike, Media * 164 Maynard Street, Williamsport * 413 Lancaster Avenue, Reading Wawa expands direct role in EV charging. Wawa previously introduced self-branded Tesla Superchargers and is now extending the approach to chargers supplied through Electrify America. The retailer said the Pennsylvania rollout will serve as a test of its Wawa-owned charging model, giving the company greater control over branding, reliability and the customer experience. "Owning Wawa-branded EV chargers allows us to provide more options throughout 14 states for our customers," said Rich Makin, Wawa's senior vice president and chief fuel and development officer. For Wawa, operating branded charging stations also creates an opportunity to integrate EV charging more closely with its convenience-store business, potentially encouraging drivers to use the stores while their vehicles charge. Electrify America provides charging platform. Electrify America's white-label platform allows Wawa to operate the stations under its own name while relying on Electrify America for the underlying charging equipment, software and network support. The arrangement gives Wawa a branded customer-facing charging network without requiring the retailer to independently develop all of the technology and network infrastructure. The eight Pennsylvania stations will add to Wawa's existing relationships with charging providers. The company also hosts IONNA fast chargers and Tesla Superchargers at selected locations. The new Wawa-branded stations are not intended to replace those existing partnerships, but instead expand the retailer's direct role in EV charging. Pennsylvania rollout tests new charging strategy. Wawa has not announced individual opening dates or pricing for the eight stations. The Pennsylvania deployment will provide the retailer with experience operating branded high-power charging infrastructure as EV charging becomes an increasingly important part of the convenience-store business. The use of both NACS and CCS at five locations also gives drivers using different charging standards access to the new high-power sites.
