About the job

Requirements
  • A Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science and at least three years of experience in formability evaluation.
  • Strong expertise in the mechanics of sheet metal forming.
  • Experience with experimental sheet formability evaluation techniques such as forming limit diagrams, tribological behavior, and springback.
  • Familiarity with industrial forming processes.
  • Strong skills with commercial finite element analysis software such as ABAQUS, LS-DYNA, COPRA, or equivalent, for predicting formability in different industrial forming processes.
  • Expertise in Digital Image Correlation.
  • Familiarity with three-dimensional microstructure construction tools such as Dream.3D to generate representative volume elements for subsequent analysis.
  • Expertise in crystal plasticity to enable multiscale prediction of mechanical behavior from product microstructure and phase properties.
Responsibilities
  • Follow ArcelorMittal safety policies and procedures and take ownership of improving safe operation in the sheet steel formability laboratory.
  • Manage the formability laboratory equipment and serve as the point of contact for laboratory evaluations in ArcelorMittal North America.
  • Develop standard operating procedures for laboratory equipment and ensure compliance with the laboratory Quality Management System.
  • Conduct experimental determination of global and local forming limits according to industry standards and customer specifications.
  • Design tooling and test methods to replicate part-forming and stamping operations.
  • Use experimental findings to provide guidelines for successful forming of ArcelorMittal products.
  • Perform finite element analysis simulations of forming processes using commercial software.
  • Develop techniques to continuously improve finite element analysis predictions of part forming under production conditions.
  • Collaborate with product design and AEPX teams to provide insight into formability behavior and enable improved products and successful end-customer implementation.
  • Conduct research and development activities and collaborate with other ArcelorMittal research and development facilities and customers on formability, stamping, and deformation mechanics of ArcelorMittal sheet steel products.
  • Travel locally and internationally, as needed, to support other ArcelorMittal research and development laboratories or customer trials.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science, with a strong emphasis on solid mechanics as applied to sheet steel formability and fracture.

About the company

ArcelorMittal is a global steel and mining company with an integrated value chain that includes iron ore and metallurgical coal mining, steelmaking, and the production of finished steel products. It mines raw materials, turns them into steel at its plants, and then makes finished steel products for sectors like automotive, construction, packaging, and energy. What sets it apart is its end-to-end supply chain, large scale, and ongoing efforts to lower carbon emissions through its XCarb program and sustainability initiatives. Its goal is to reduce the carbon footprint of its steelmaking, pursue sustainable practices across its operations, and grow its business by investing in technology and new steel solutions.

What believers are saying

  • June 2025 tariffs and July 2026 TRQ rules reduced imports and lifted Europe margins.
  • Dunkirk's €1.3 billion EAF and Gijón capacity add higher-value, lower-carbon output.
  • 2Q 2026 EBITDA reached $2.1 billion, showing pricing power and operational recovery.

What critics are saying

  • September 2026 missile strikes shuttered Kryvyi Rih, triggering a roughly $1 billion impairment.
  • Italy litigation over ADI demands up to €7.0 billion and distracts management.
  • Prolonged European demand weakness and imports can erase returns, forcing closures and asset writedowns.

What makes ArcelorMittal unique

  • ArcelorMittal integrates mining, steelmaking, and downstream finishing across global markets.
  • XCarb and 2026 EAF investments make decarbonization a commercial product, not branding.
  • European scale plus automotive-grade electrical steels create customer switching costs and pricing power.

ArcelorMittal identified as competitor of U.S. Steel Corp.

McCormick is also an investor in ArcelorMittal, a multinational steel company that competes with the Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel — via a revocable trust, a type of trust that can be amended during life and that is often used to manage assets and avoid probate at death.
