What believers are saying

  • Data centers drive growth: AMD's revenue rose 50% to $11.5 billion in the June 2026 quarter.
  • US learning support is conditional: AMD reimburses up to $5,250 yearly for education, subject to manager approval and funding.
  • Planned demand has an anchor: AMD's July 2026 Anthropic deal targets up to two gigawatts of computing from 2027.

What critics are saying

  • Advanced chip supply relies on one foundry: TSMC makes all AMD processor and graphics wafers at 7nm or smaller.
  • Gaming is shrinking despite AI growth: AMD's gaming revenue fell 31% to $779 million in the June 2026 quarter.
  • Lab work limits location flexibility: AMD lists its Santa Clara optical-interconnect integration engineer role as on-site.

What makes AMD unique

  • Two console families use its designs: AMD designs custom processors for Sony's PlayStation 5 and Microsoft's Xbox Series.
  • Developers inspect its GPU software: AMD's ROCm stack is open source, while Nvidia's CUDA platform remains proprietary.
  • Chip circuitry stays adjustable: AMD sells adaptive processors whose hardware configuration changes after manufacture, without replacing the chip.

AMD falls 10.9% to $505 on Intel's PC warning ahead of Tuesday earnings

AMD shares fell 10.9% on Friday to $505 after Intel warned of weak PC demand, dragging chip stocks down. The stock is still up 42.4% over six months but sits 23% below its 52-week high of $659. PCs matter less to AMD now. Data center revenue rose 107% to $6.7 billion in the second quarter and made up 58% of total revenue of $11.5 billion. Client sales were $3.1 billion. AMD reports third-quarter results on Tuesday, November 3. It guided revenue to about $13 billion, against a consensus of $13.09 billion. Chief executive officer Lisa Su expects data center revenue to more than double in 2027. At 45.1x forward earnings, the stock is pricey. Rising memory content in MI450 systems could squeeze gross margin, which AMD guided to about 56%.

AMD falls 11% after Intel's PC warning, but Intel's 78% data centre jump matters more

AMD shares fell 10.88% to $504.80 on October 30, days before the chipmaker reports earnings on November 3. The drop followed Intel's weak fourth-quarter guidance of $15.0 billion to $16.0 billion in revenue, which sent Intel down 28.58%. Intel warned the PC slowdown will last through the first half of next year and expects client revenue to fall more than 20% from the third quarter. Yet its data center and AI revenue rose 78% to $7.3 billion. That matters more to AMD, whose data center revenue more than doubled to $6.7 billion in the second quarter. Client revenue, about 27% of sales, was $3.1 billion. Analysts expect AMD's total revenue to be about $13.1 billion.

AMD data center revenue jumps 107% to $6.72B, making Cathie Wood's trim irrelevant

AMD's second-quarter data center revenue rose 107% to $6.72B, lifting total revenue 50.1% to $11.54B. Non-GAAP earnings per share of $1.66 beat the $1.61 estimate. Management guided third-quarter revenue to about $13B and expects data center revenue to "more than double year-over-year in 2027." OpenAI, Meta, and Anthropic have committed to up to 6 GW, 6 GW, and 2 GW of capacity respectively. The stock trades at $566.42, up 164.48% this year. The forward price-to-earnings ratio is about 35, but the trailing ratio is near 148. ARK Investment Management trimmed its stake but still holds 1,416,443 shares. The trim likely reflects ETF rebalancing, not a verdict on AMD. Risks include falling gaming sales, export controls, and the timing of Helios rack shipments, which ramp from the fourth quarter.

AMD stock could reach $600-$750 by 2030, but another tripling looks unlikely

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) shares have fallen about 15% from a record closing high of $649.42 on October 6, and now trade above $550. The stock more than tripled over the past 52 weeks, from a low of around $188. Motley Fool analyst Daniel Sparks expects AMD to end 2030 between $600 and $750, a return of roughly 2% to 8% a year. His estimate rests on earnings per share of $20 to $25 and a price-to-earnings ratio of 30. AMD's target is adjusted earnings per share above $20. Warrants for up to 320 million shares, granted to OpenAI and Meta Platforms, could dilute that figure to about $17. Sparks sees AMD's plan as credible but says the price already reflects much of it. He would hold a small position.
