JLL appoints former Meta leader Sarah Pollard to drive EMEA growth.

JLL appoints former Meta leader Sarah Pollard to drive EMEA growth. JLL has appointed Sarah Pollard as Division President, Work Dynamics EMEA, to lead the firm's Financial Services, Public Institutions, and Data Centres divisions in EMEA and drive continued growth across these high-priority sectors. In her role, Pollard will be accountable for service delivery and growth across her divisions in alignment with JLL's Global Industry Leads. She will report to Sue Asprey Price, CEO, EMEA Work Dynamics & Global Head of Portfolio Services, and will join the Work Dynamics EMEA Board. Based primarily across JLL's London offices, Pollard will initially lead Financial Services and Public Institutions, with accountability for the Data Centres division transferring to her at the end of November. The appointment comes as JLL's EMEA business continues to grow and client needs become increasingly sophisticated across both sectors. JLL's latest EMEA Mid-Year Data Centre Report identified record growth across the region, with FLAP-D markets on track to deliver approximately 453 MW in 2026 - roughly tripling 2020 volumes - while live capacity reached 3.8 GW. The sector is currently experiencing its most significant geographic transformation in a decade, driven by AI-scale power requirements and grid constraints in established markets. Meanwhile, JLL's Future of Work Survey 2026 reveals that global financial services organisations are navigating unprecedented complexity around AI adoption and portfolio strategy. The sector shows the widest range of AI maturity of any industry, with 29.8% still bystanding while 18.3 per cent have reached the optimising stage. With 67.1 per cent planning office expansion and 38.9 per cent naming rental increases a top occupancy cost driver - the highest of 15 industries surveyed - financial services clients require sophisticated guidance as they commit to space on longer horizons while AI's impact on footprint remains unresolved. Pollard's extensive real estate leadership experience will help address these challenges and opportunities, with a background in global operations, client strategy, and high-performing team leadership across some of the world's most demanding technology and financial services environments. Pollard joins JLL from Meta, where she most recently served as Global Head of Central Operations, leading complex, multi-regional operational frameworks for one of the world's most sophisticated real estate portfolios. Prior to Meta, Pollard spent four years at Amazon in senior global and regional leadership roles, where she drove strategic real estate initiatives across multiple markets. She also previously spent over two years with JLL EMEA Work Dynamics, after having held senior strategy and operational roles at BNP Paribas Real Estate, Regus, Johnson Controls, and Barclays, building a proven track record of aligning portfolio and workplace strategies to clients' business objectives and leading high-performing, multi-disciplinary teams. Pollard said of her appointment: "I'm excited to be rejoining JLL at such a dynamic time for the business. Having spent recent years working at the forefront of global real estate operations with Meta and Amazon, I've seen firsthand the value of having built experience on both the client and supply side. That perspective allows me to understand clients' needs and challenges in ways that strengthen how we build partnerships and deliver strategic solutions at scale. "What attracted me back to JLL was the opportunity to lead a business within a world class organisation whose values I am aligned to. JLL's integrated platform and deep sector expertise position the firm uniquely to support clients as their requirements become more complex. My immediate focus is to leverage my client side and operational experience to ensure we have the frameworks in place to set the business and its customers up for continued success." Asprey Price commented: "We are thrilled to welcome Sarah back to JLL at such an important moment for our business. Her experience leading global real estate operations at Meta and Amazon - two of the world's most sophisticated and fast-moving organisations - gives her a unique perspective on the complexity our largest clients are navigating. Combined with her proven ability to align real estate strategies with complex business objectives, she is perfectly positioned to lead these critical divisions as we deliver our Accelerate 2030 strategy." She added: "Sarah's deep understanding of how to scale operations while maintaining excellence in delivery will be invaluable as our clients' needs become increasingly sophisticated. In financial services, clients are making expansion commitments while navigating AI-driven transformation, and in data centres, operators are securing capacity in an increasingly competitive landscape shaped by unprecedented infrastructure growth. Her leadership will be instrumental in ensuring we deliver the depth of sector expertise and coordinated solutions our clients expect." JLL to shut UK planning department.

JLL to shut UK planning department. JLL is set to close its UK planning division, putting the 25-strong team at risk of redundancy. The property consultancy said in a statement that it had made "the difficult but necessary decision" to propose that some roles within the business are made redundant. JLL's planning team spans at least 25 members, with employees in offices in London, Bristol, Manchester, Leeds and Edinburgh. The team is led by Raoul Veevers, head of planning UK, including London and the South East, who joined from Cluttons in 2022. Joanna Gabrilatsou is head of regional planning and town planning and is based at JLL's Manchester office. She has been with the firm since 2011. JLL's statement read: "We are always reviewing our business to ensure that the delivery of our services meets our strategic priorities and client needs. "This has resulted in the difficult but necessary decision to propose that some roles within the business could be made redundant. "We have strong leadership and teams and remain confident in our ability to deliver continued value for our clients in the market." JLL's former UK chief executive Stephanie Hyde, departed in April last year, with Matt Richards promoted to the role. He previously served as chief executive of capital markets for EMEA. In May of that year, JLL made nearly 150 roles redundant within its UK property and asset management arm. Knight Frank recently announced its own redundancy consultation, which it expects to affect less than 3% of its UK workforce. Headcounts across the 10 agencies remained virtually level across the top 10, with only 307 employees added year on year to a combined workforce of more than 23,000.

AI data centre boom strains power grids, fuels battery storage investment race.

AI data centre boom strains power grids, fuels battery storage investment race. Surging AI and data centre demand is straining global power grids, pushing tech firms and investors toward battery storage and direct renewable energy acquisitions to secure reliable electricity, according to JLL. JLL, a professional services firm specialising in real estate and investment management, has outlined how artificial intelligence and data centre expansion are affecting global power markets, citing both infrastructure constraints and investment implications. A decades-long trend of stable or declining electricity demand has reversed. North American data centre capacity is projected to nearly double from 57 GW to 109 GW by 2030, while hyperscalers have committed $200 billion in capital expenditure for 2026 alone - a 51% increase from 2025. According to JLL's global Energy & Infrastructure Advisory platform, securing power infrastructure has become a key constraint in the expansion of AI-related computing capacity. Grid infrastructure emerges as primary constraint. Transmission infrastructure, originally designed for large, centralised power stations, is struggling to accommodate a decentralised influx of new renewable energy sources. This has created grid congestion in primary markets across the U.S., Europe and Asia Pacific. Despite the record capital expenditure figures cited above, interconnection queues for new renewable projects now extend to four years or more in some regions, with certain areas forced to pause new connections entirely. These dynamics are playing out at different speeds across key markets. In the U.S., interconnection reform and merchant power exposure are reshaping deal structures. In Europe, regulatory frameworks are evolving unevenly across member states. In APAC, data centre build-out is outpacing grid planning in several markets, according to JLL. Battery storage positioned as infrastructure solution. Battery energy storage systems are being used as infrastructure to manage grid constraints and renewable energy intermittency. JLL's Energy & Infrastructure Advisory advised on the disposal of a 395MW/790MWh operational battery energy storage system (BESS) portfolio in the UK, which JLL describes as the largest operational sale in Europe to date and says it established a new pricing benchmark for the market. The transaction earned JLL three awards at the 2026 Tamarindo Energy Storage Investment Awards, including Financial Advisor of the Year and M&A Deal of the Year. Regional dynamics drive partnership models. Grid access challenges are prompting collaboration between energy developers and data centre operators across global markets. Some technology companies are becoming direct participants in the energy market, with some acquiring operating renewable assets outright to secure power supply. In one example, a Bitcoin miner in Texas purchased an operating wind farm that JLL was marketing, in order to secure its power infrastructure. JLL says this demonstrates that energy users are willing to pay above market rates for reliable power supply. According to JLL, investment opportunities extend beyond traditional power generation to assets that provide flexibility and certainty in constrained markets. The firm says power access has evolved from an operational consideration to a factor affecting asset viability and valuation.
