About the job
- An Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university, or satisfactory completion of two years of college; in either case with major work in recreation or a related field, or two years of full-time experience in the recreation field with a dependent adult population.
- Be at least eighteen years of age.
- Have the required references and criminal record check.
- Have a valid New York State driver’s license and a clean driving record that meets the Agency’s Clean Driving Record Policy.
- Communicate with residents and staff in English and read and write English.
- Lift up to 30 pounds unassisted.
- Visually observe residents, hear emergency systems and verbal needs expressed by residents, and turn, stoop, bend, and stretch to assist residents.
- Stand for prolonged periods.
- Use equipment competently.
- Respond to emergencies, including resident choking and evacuation of residents and visitors in the event of fire.
- Possess a working knowledge of Residents’ Rights.
- Genuinely enjoy working with crafts, activities, and the geriatric or adult special-needs population.
- Respect and maintain the confidentiality and rights of residents, and demonstrate a positive and caring attitude toward residents, staff, and guests.
- Develop a program that promotes active involvement of all residents by providing planned, coordinated, and structured social, physical, intellectual, and recreational activities based on individual preferences and choices.
- Plan, prepare, and implement a monthly activities calendar and post it in a prominent location no later than the first day of each month, with the first week posted seven days before the new month.
- Review each resident’s interests and capabilities upon move-in, document the information in an individualized index card system or equivalent, and update it as needed for activity planning.
- Schedule at least fourteen hours of planned activities per week.
- Schedule outings so each resident has the opportunity to participate in at least one outing every other month.
- Plan and implement one-on-one activities with residents.
- Enable residents to participate in solitary activities.
- Notify residents of activities and assist and encourage them to attend.
- Decorate the facility for holidays and remove decorations within five days after each holiday.
- Order activity supplies according to the budget, account for expenditures, and properly record and submit receipts.
- Plan facility programs, parties, potlucks, and other celebrations with Administrator approval.
- Develop a volunteer program when desired, and train and coordinate volunteer activities.
- Attend staff in-service meetings.
- Schedule and facilitate a monthly Resident Council meeting, document meeting minutes and resolutions, review the minutes with the Administrator, and provide copies to residents.
- Assist with new staff orientation related to the role of activities.
- Evaluate the overall effectiveness of the Activity Program at least every six months using resident input, document findings, review results with the Administrator, and make appropriate changes.
- Ensure that material safety data sheets are available for substances used in the Activity Department and keep them secure and supervised when not in use.

Pan-American Square Apartments wins Community Impact Award. SWBR Company is pleased to announce that DePaul Pan-American Square Apartments has been recognized with the 2025 Community Impact Award by the Buffalo/WNY Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. This award honors projects that make a meaningful difference in their communities through thoughtful, inclusive design. Completed earlier this year, Pan-American Square Apartments transformed a former rail corridor into a 150-unit affordable and supportive housing community in Buffalo, NY. Designed to Passive House standards, the development provides energy-efficient homes and essential services for seniors and individuals experiencing homelessness or mental illness. More than housing, it is a catalyst for community revitalization, delivering stability, sustainability, and hope for Buffalo's most vulnerable residents. Jury Comment: The integration of community-based programs and sustainable design at the Pan-American Square Apartments struck the jury. Exemplifying the criteria of the Community Award, the Pan-American Square Apartments took a holistic approach to senior living and supportive housing that will have a lasting positive impact on the WNY community. It is clear that this project will uplift and provide stability for the most vulnerable members of its community and the design team took every opportunity to maximize resources available to its residents. SWBR provided architectural, interior design, structural engineering, landscape architecture, and graphic design services for the project. The awards celebration was held Thursday, November 6 in Buffalo, NY.
