What believers are saying

  • Scale is set to jump: the Dominion deal signed in May 2026 would form the largest regulated electric utility worldwide.
  • Regulated growth is steady: FPL's capital earning approved returns grew 9.3% in the year to June 2026.
  • A nuclear restart adds jobs: a $1.9 billion federal loan in September 2026 backs 450 Iowa plant roles.

What critics are saying

  • Old scandals still cost money: NextEra agreed in June 2026 to pay $150 million to settle shareholder fraud claims.
  • Affordability pressure is rising: Florida regulators approved FPL's $7 billion, four-year rate increase in November 2025, its largest ever.
  • Expect reorganization: the May 2026 Dominion deal plans dual headquarters in Juno Beach and Richmond, Virginia.

What makes NextEra Energy unique

  • Its project queue is huge: Energy Resources had about 35.1 gigawatts of signed projects awaiting construction in July 2026.
  • Google buys its revived nuclear power: it agreed in October 2025 to take all Duane Arnold output for 25 years.
  • It owns nuclear beyond Florida: it is sole owner of Wisconsin's Point Beach and largest owner of New Hampshire's Seabrook.

Brookfield, NextEra to build $100B AI hub on former Kentucky uranium site

The US Department of Energy (DoE) has announced a $100 billion private investment to turn a former uranium enrichment site in Western Kentucky into the Paducah American Energy Hub. Led by energy secretary Chris Wright, the project will house an artificial intelligence and high-performance computing campus. Brookfield Asset Management will build the 1.8-gigawatt (GW) data centre campus. NextEra Energy will develop 2GW of gas-fired generation and 2.6GW of battery storage, with surplus power fed back to the regional grid. The phased buildout is targeted for 2032. It is expected to create about 8,000 construction jobs and 600 permanent jobs. The project arrives as investors grow wary of AI infrastructure spending, and Gallup polling shows about 71% of Americans oppose local data centres.

$22B gas-fired power plant to fuel South Texas data centre campus under US-Korea deal

A $22 billion gas-fired power plant will supply a data center campus in South Texas, the result of a trade deal between the US and South Korea. Dubbed Project Star, the plant in Encinal, La Salle County, will be operated by NextEra Energy Resources and Related Companies, with San Antonio-based Lewis Energy Group as a partner. The plant will generate 6.47 gigawatts, mainly for the 5-gigawatt data center campus that Related Digital is building next door. Excess power will go to the Texas grid. NextEra expects about 8,400 construction jobs and 170 permanent jobs. The first phase should be operational in 2029, with full capacity by 2032. The project stems from a $350 billion 2025 US-South Korea deal. Korean companies will supply power generation equipment and help with engineering, construction, and operations.

Nuclear boom: three dividend stocks yielding up to 5.3% beat loss-making Oklo and NuScale

Electricity demand over the next 20 years is expected to run six times higher than from 2005 to 2025, driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and electric vehicles. Nuclear power is set to help meet it. Small reactor developers Oklo and NuScale Power are risky bets. In the second quarter of 2026, Oklo made $1.4 million in revenue against $74.4 million in operating expenses; NuScale made $75,000 against just over $64 million. Neither pays a dividend. Dividend payers offer other routes. Constellation Energy, which runs the largest US nuclear fleet, yields about 0.5% and has power deals with Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon. NextEra Energy yields 3.2% and plans to buy Dominion Energy. Brookfield Renewable yields 5.3% and owns a stake in Westinghouse.
