  • Crew Member I requires educational background equivalent to a high school diploma.
  • Crew Member I requires a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license.
  • Crew Member I must possess, or be able to obtain within one year of hire, VDOT-approved Basic Work Zone Traffic Control certification.
  • Crew Member I must complete and maintain OSHA-required training and certifications applicable to the position, including assigned training within 30 days of employment.
  • Crew Member II requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Crew Member II requires one year of experience and/or training involving manual labor, successful progression from Crew Member I, or equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Crew Member II must meet and maintain all minimum qualifications, licenses, certifications, and training requirements established for the preceding position in the Crew Member career ladder.
  • Crew Member II must possess VDOT-approved Basic Work Zone Traffic Control certification.
  • Crew Member II must complete and maintain OSHA-required training and certifications applicable to the position, including assigned training within 30 days in position.
  • Crew Member II requires a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license and a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B.
Responsibilities
  • Crew Member I supports drainage maintenance, including cleaning gutters, culverts, and drainage structures, and performing basic digging and routine maintenance tasks.
  • Crew Member I aids in removing blockages from sewer mains under supervision and assists with routine sewer pump station maintenance, including cleaning, debris removal, and general upkeep.
  • Crew Member I walks along sewer lines to identify and report visible issues or concerns to higher-level staff.
  • Crew Member I assists with site cleanup after sewer maintenance or emergency response activities.
  • Crew Member II assists with and performs installation, repair, and maintenance of the City’s water and sewer lines, including repairing sewer lines and replacing gasket sleeves and fittings at pump stations and along main lines.
  • Crew Member II performs roadway and surface restoration, including asphalt patching, replacing concrete curbs and gutters, sidewalk repair, brick work, and installing materials such as rubber mulch.
  • Crew Member II installs, repairs, and maintains fire hydrants, exercises valves with appropriate equipment, and flushes hydrants according to system maintenance procedures.
  • Employees follow established safety procedures and may assist with emergency response activities as needed.
