Requirements
  • Registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) through the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Current licensure as required by the state board where services are provided: Licensed Dietitian in West Virginia, Maryland, or Ohio, as applicable.
  • A state criminal background check and, if applicable, a federal criminal background check for regulated areas.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Basic addition and subtraction skills.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to organize work requiring concentrated mental activity.
  • Ability to respond to changes in work volume throughout the shift.
  • Ability to work Saturdays and some holidays and occasionally attend evening meetings.
  • Ability to interact positively with coworkers, patients, families, and other members of the medical team.
  • Frequent walking, sitting, and standing are necessary to complete the work.
Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive, high-quality medical nutrition therapy to patients.
  • Complete physician-ordered consults and instructions according to standards of care, document them in the medical record, and contact physicians regarding concerns or recommendations.
  • Document NPO/Clear Liquid notes by day five and follow up until nutrition is provided unless contraindicated.
  • Complete and accurately document calorie counts, and document a summary within 24 hours of completion when results warrant nutritional recommendations.
  • Accurately and promptly calculate and report nitrogen balance and metabolic cart study results.
  • Complete and document nutrition assessments for high-risk patients according to standards of care, including diet appropriateness for diagnosis; adequacy of tube feeding, infant formula, or parenteral nutrition orders; laboratory values; drug-nutrient interactions; medical history; current nutritional needs; nutrition education needs; care plan development; and writing orders in the electronic medical record when intervention is needed.
  • Use order-writing privileges, with physician co-signature, when the physician orders the MNT Protocol, to order medical nutrition therapies within scope of practice.
  • Maintain clinical competency through initial verification and the annual performance appraisal process, and follow the RD order-writing privileges policy.
  • Complete and document follow-up to assessments and consults according to standards.
  • Attend local or national meetings and conferences requested by physicians, required to maintain hospital-program accreditation, or intended to foster partnerships with other facilities.
  • When applicable, guide and supervise daily activities of the nutritional therapy support team, including difficult or unusual diet orders, tube-feeding calculations, and infant-formula calculations; document potential or actual errors or harmful interactions committed by NCAs on assigned units where appropriate, and intervene and participate in disciplinary actions as appropriate.
  • Work with physicians, nurse managers, and nursing staff on assigned units to improve medical nutrition therapy, including diet-texture changes, appropriate foods and textures for aspiration risk in coordination with speech pathologists, and medication timing to prevent drug-nutrient interactions.
  • Address patient food complaints by providing alternative selections or arrangements and follow up with appropriate managers on food-quality issues.
  • Review and update clinical rotation assignments annually to reflect practice changes and feedback from previous interns unless determined by the student's university; develop and teach classes in areas of specialization to interns.
  • Monitor interns to ensure they meet standards before working unsupervised; review and co-sign their medical-record documentation; correct assignments and evaluate progress within two weeks of rotation completion; attend intern case-study presentations, question interns, and evaluate presentations.
  • As requested, develop and present in-services to healthcare personnel, food-service personnel, and students.
  • As requested, develop and present lectures to community groups.
