What believers are saying

  • July 28, 2026 guidance called for $4.0 billion Q1 FY2027 revenue.
  • Advanced packaging revenue target rose from $635 million in 2025 to $1 billion in 2026.
  • KLA returned $3.35 billion to shareholders in fiscal 2026 and approved another $7 billion.

What critics are saying

  • China produced 29.8% of fiscal 2026 revenue; BIS restrictions already capped growth.
  • Export controls hit advanced technology transactions, and November 2026 rule changes threaten sales.
  • A prolonged AI capex pause and China cutoff would break growth and compress valuation.

What makes KLA unique

  • KLA's September 2026 advanced packaging portfolio spans wafers, panels, and components.
  • July 28, 2026 results showed $13.58 billion revenue and $3.77 billion free cash flow.
  • KLA's process control is essential for sub-2nm and AI chip manufacturing complexity.

Chip equipment makers eye $229B windfall as AI drives 2nm expansion

Global chip equipment sales are forecast to reach a record $229.5 billion in 2028, according to industry trade group SEMI. Four companies dominate different stages of chipmaking: ASML makes lithography machines that print circuit patterns, Applied Materials and Lam Research produce tools that deposit and carve chip layers, whilst KLA specialises in inspection equipment. ASML holds a monopoly on extreme ultraviolet machines used for advanced chips, capturing roughly a quarter of chipmaker capital spending. Applied Materials trades at about 29 times forward earnings, the cheapest of the four. Lam recently posted its highest gross margin in 20 years. KLA trades at approximately 36 times forward earnings, the priciest valuation in the group. All four companies hold Strong Buy or Buy ratings from analysts.

KLA reports Q4 revenue of $3.66B, forecasts Q1 revenue of $4B as AI infrastructure drives demand

KLA Corporation reported fourth quarter fiscal 2026 revenues of $3.66 billion, above the midpoint of guidance. GAAP diluted earnings per share came in at $1.04, whilst non-GAAP diluted EPS reached $1.05, both at the upper end of guidance. For the full fiscal year ended 30 June 2026, the semiconductor equipment manufacturer posted revenues of $13.58 billion and GAAP diluted EPS of $3.66. Operating cash flow for the year totalled $4.14 billion, with free cash flow of $3.77 billion. The company returned $3.35 billion to shareholders during fiscal 2026 through dividends and share repurchases. KLA completed a ten-for-one stock split on 11 June 2026. For the first quarter of fiscal 2027, KLA expects revenues of $4.0 billion, plus or minus $200 million, with non-GAAP diluted EPS projected at $1.16, plus or minus $0.10.

KLA stock pulled back 15% before earnings, but analysts see 9.4% upside

KLA is set to report quarterly earnings Tuesday after the bell, with analysts expecting 13.7% year-on-year revenue growth. The semiconductor equipment maker's shares closed at $210.52, down 15% over the past month but still up 16% over 90 days. The most popular valuation framework suggests KLA is 9.4% undervalued, placing fair value at $232.43 per share. That outlook assumes multiyear AI-driven wafer fabrication spending will remain durable, supported by government incentives and increasing process complexity. Estimates have been broadly reaffirmed over the past month, meaning this earnings report will serve as a check on whether KLA is meeting current expectations for the semiconductor equipment cycle. The valuation relies on continued revenue expansion, rising margins, and a premium earnings multiple through 2026. Risks include potential tariff pressure on margins, weaker China demand, and tighter export controls.
