McDonald's invests $8.5B in AI drive-thru system after earlier attempt with IBM failed

McDonald's is investing $8.5 billion through 2036 to modernise its restaurants, including deployment of an AI ordering system called Archy in drive-thrus. The company says Archy is taking orders in English and Spanish with over 90% accuracy, outperforming its previous IBM-powered system that ended in 2024. Archy is part of ArchIQ, a broader system developed with Google since 2023 that handles inventory tracking, employee scheduling, and order verification. A wider US rollout is expected in 2027. The investment comes as McDonald's faces price-sensitive customers and flat traffic. The company's shares fell 6% after announcing the strategy. While nearly 90% of organisations now use AI regularly, only 37% report it has contributed to earnings, according to McKinsey research.

McDonald's launches $1B ad network to display third-party ads on drive-thru screens

McDonald's is launching the McDonald's Media Network, a new advertising business that will allow other companies to place ads across its digital platforms and restaurant screens. The fast-food chain began testing the concept in August 2024 at 450 company-owned US restaurants, featuring ads on digital drive-thru menu boards after customers place orders. The pilot could eventually expand to menu boards and self-order kiosks. Global Chief Marketing Officer Morgan Flatley said McDonald's hopes the media network can become a $1 billion business. McDonald's is entering the commerce media market, which is expected to reach more than $100 billion in the US by 2028. The company plans to leverage its reach—85% of Americans visit McDonald's at least once yearly—and 220 million active loyalty members worldwide to build the advertising business, following similar initiatives by Amazon and Walmart.

McDonald's Kuwait launches Braille menus

McDonald's Kuwait launches Braille menus Sign language ordering service provided in cooperation with MetaSign Published on 29-09-2026 McDonald's Kuwait announced the launch of Braille menus and a sign language ordering service in cooperation with MetaSign, in a new step aimed at enhancing accessibility and providing a more independent and inclusive experience for blind and visually impaired people, as well as deaf and hard of hearing people. The Braille menus allow customers to view the food menu and choose their orders independently, while the sign language service enables customers to scan a QR code inside the restaurant to communicate directly with a specialized sign language interpreter, who facilitates communication between them and the McDonald's team and completes the ordering process smoothly. The service is offered in cooperation with MetaSign, a service specialized in facilitating communication between sign language users and the community through qualified interpreters. These services come as an extension of McDonald's Kuwait's long-standing commitment to enhancing accessibility, which over the years has included developing environments and experiences more suitable for people with disabilities. Through the launch of Braille menus and the sign language ordering service, McDonald's Kuwait continues to develop its customer experience, allowing more of them to read the menu, communicate with the restaurant team, and make their choices more independently, affirming that enhancing accessibility is an ongoing path that evolves with the needs of society and available technologies.

New Newport Isle of Wight McDonald's creates 125 jobs and play area.

New Newport Isle of Wight McDonald's creates 125 jobs and play area. A new McDonald's drive-thru and restaurant - the first on the Isle of Wight with a children's play area - opens tomorrow (Wednesday), creating more than 100 jobs. The fast-food branch will be the first business to open at the new Newport Retail Park. For local McDonald's franchisee Steve Smith, from Lake, the new outlet has been a long time coming. "I first had discussions about this site about 20 years ago. From left: Steve Smith, local franchisee, Justinc Chandler, business manager and Anita Wade, area manager (Image: IWCP) Inside the restaurant (Image: IWCP) "It's great to see it all coming together. It's the perfect timing and a great opportunity for us and investment in the Island." Steve said a multi-million pound investment has been made at the new site, which brings with it a huge jobs boost for the Island. Around 125 new roles are being created through apprenticeships, full-time and part-time jobs. Staff will work across the new site and the Island's other two McDonald's, giving each restaurant a mix of experienced and new employees. New McDonald's sneak peek "It's going to make us one of the biggest employers on the Isle of Wight. It's here for the community", Steve said. As well as an outdoor Play Land with a slide, the Newport Retail Park McDonald's has other features not available at the Island's two existing sites. A separate courier area for McDelivery drivers lets them rest, charge their phones and stay apart from other customers. There are also automatic drinks systems in the kitchen that dispense beverages as soon the order is placed. Inside the restaurant (Image: IWCP) The new outdoor play area (Image: IWCP) Steve said there were no plans to close the Newport town centre branch and the new restaurant was designed to complement, not compete with, it. He said: "The reason the new branch is here is to help with the unmet demand to take the pressure off a little bit". The restaurant is part of the redevelopment of the former St George's Park site, where Newport IW FC previously played. The drive-thru at the new McDonald's (Image: IWCP) More Stories
