Tiny photonics chip eases navigation system development. Integrating several sensing and processing functions, the compact chip resists jamming and spoofing while eliminating the need for bulky gyrometers. August 28, 2026 Anello Photonics' SiPhOG chip integrates several sensing and processing functions into a single chip to simplify navigation systems development. Navigation systems in environments such as marine and aviation have long been subject to compromises. Traditional GPS-based systems are vulnerable to inaccuracies caused by jamming and spoofing. Fiber-optic gyroscopes, while accurate, are bulky and expensive. Mario Paniccia, CEO of startup Anello Photonics, believes he has developed a solution that addresses the drawbacks of both technologies. Silicon Photonics technology bridges the gap. Drawing from his extensive experience in photonics research and development at companies such as Intel, Paniccia founded Anello Photonics to develop silicon-based gyroscope technology that bridges the gap between fiber-optic gyroscopes and GPS systems. The result is SiPhOG (Silicon Photonics Optical Gyro), which Paniccia says provides the performance of fiber-optic gyroscopes without their bulk. After several years of development, Paniccia led Anello Photonics to create the SiPhOG chip. Measuring just 2 x 5 mm, the chip integrates the functions of 4 splitters and couplers, 3 photodetectors, 2 modulators, a delay line, a polarization filter, 2 heaters, and a variable optical attenuator. The chip makes it possible to build a gyroscope with no moving parts that is not susceptible to vibration and temperature variations. Superior performance in small form factor. The chip delivers the performance and stability of traditional high-end fiber-optic gyroscopes required for demanding navigation applications, but without requiring a multitude of instruments to perform sensing and processing functions. At the same time, the chip provides significantly higher performance than MEMS-based lower-end gyroscopes that contain moving parts and are subject to thermal drift, electromagnetic interference (EMI), and vibration. Paniccia stated that the SiPhOG chip can be produced in high volume and is adaptable for a range of applications, including land vehicles, robotics, aerial navigation, and marine applications. The company is shipping complete product solutions based on several integrated platforms that incorporate the chip. These include one with an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) and GNSS INS for land vehicles and robotics, and another with the chip and an aerial or maritime INS for aviation or seaworthy applications. In one demonstration, the Anello chip was integrated into a Maritime INS on a US Naval Special Warfare Command Special Boat Teams Combatant Craft Assault vessel. In another application, the chip was deployed in a Maritime INS aboard BlackSea Technologies' Chaser autonomous surface vessel. When Spencer began covering electronics years ago, there was no internet, no cell phones, let alone smartphones, and PCs were emerging but not widespread. Robots and artificial intelligence? Only in a science fiction film. Modems were a curiosity requiring patience fumbling with connection scripts, and Bluetooth and wireless communications did not exist. Spencer has witnessed and covered, first-hand, many developments in the underpinnings of these modern technologies that we take for granted. Now, we're in the age of artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, high-speed signaling hardware, FPGAs, microcontrollers, and advanced design tools. Spencer is again in the trenches covering these developments, and looking forward to the technologies of the future. At the same time, Spencer has adapted his reporting and editing style to the digital age. It's not just news stories and features but also social media posts, and videos, as seen below. Adapting to 21st-century media consumption habits has kept Spencer on his toes learning new tools and skills, though he admits it is sometimes hard to teach an old dog new tricks. Spencer's long list of editorial stops reads like a Who's Who in technical content brands, including Electronic Products, Electronic Buyers News, EE Times, Power Electronics, and NASA Tech Briefs.
