  • Technical fluency sufficient to read design documents, follow architecture discussions, challenge estimates or trade-offs, and earn credibility with senior engineers.
  • Seven to ten years of experience, including significant experience in a large-scale technology organization with multiple squads or platform teams and firsthand experience with engineering-scaling challenges.
  • A track record of owning complex, cross-organizational initiatives from initial framing through measurable outcomes with senior stakeholders.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Ability to prioritize business-led actions in a changing work environment and collaborate with teams and stakeholders.
Responsibilities

  • Frame problems, build technical and business cases, secure alignment across Engineering, Product, and Security, and drive execution.
  • Lead the Tech side of company-level programs, such as European expansion and major compliance or infrastructure changes, alongside the rest of Tech leadership.

  • Drive the definition and calibration of Tech OKRs and hold the organization accountable for them.
  • Define effective performance for a 70-plus-squad engineering organization and build metrics for delivery cadence, reliability, quality, staffing and attrition, and engineering satisfaction.
  • Own the Tech leadership operating system, including staff meetings, quarterly business reviews, roadmap reviews, and architecture reviews; design the sessions, set agendas, write or commission pre-reads, frame decisions, and ensure decisions are implemented.

  • Improve decision-making quality across the Tech leadership team.
  • Lead internal and operational communications across the engineering organization, creating clear messaging from board decks through team-wide updates.
  • Complete company and Tech onboarding, including the application, accounting domain, and engineering practices; meet Tech leadership and assess organizational friction; take ownership of the leadership cadence and next planning milestone.
  • Lead selected organization-wide strategic initiatives end-to-end with measurable targets, establish a trusted metrics picture used by the Tech organization, contribute to senior Tech decisions, and shape the engineering narrative shared with the company and board.
Desired Qualifications
  • A hands-on engineering background, such as work as a software engineer, engineering manager, Technical Program Manager, architect, or equivalent.
  • Experience as a Chief of Staff, VP or Director of Engineering Operations, or in a strategy and operations function at a product-led technology company.

Qonto and Pennylane: French fintech friends and foes vie for SME market dominance

Qonto and Pennylane, two Paris-based fintechs, operate as both partners and competitors in Europe's SME financial services market. Qonto, founded in 2016 and valued at $5 billion, serves over 600,000 customers across eight European countries with business banking, corporate cards and bookkeeping tools. Pennylane, founded in 2020 and valued at $4.25 billion, has over 800,000 customers using its all-in-one accounting and financial management platform. Whilst both companies integrate with each other's services, they increasingly compete for business. The rivalry will intensify as France introduces mandatory electronic invoicing for B2B transactions in September. Qonto is pursuing a French banking licence to offer lending products, whilst Pennylane recently raised $200 million to fund potential acquisitions. Qonto's managing director emphasises their different customer acquisition strategies, though both target traditional financial incumbents.
