Samsung shares slip as South Korea's AI expansion demands power equivalent to 20 nuclear reactors

South Korea's ambitious AI expansion will require an additional 25 to 30 gigawatts of electricity, equivalent to roughly 20 modern nuclear reactors. Samsung Electronics closed 0.9% lower at 269,500 won following the announcement. Samsung, SK Hynix, and the South Korean government are advancing an 800 trillion won semiconductor project, pulling factory timelines from the 2040s into the early 2030s. The required energy would match approximately 77% of South Korea's existing 26-reactor nuclear fleet. Samsung reported 171.5 trillion won in quarterly revenue and 89.5 trillion won in operating profit. Whilst the company possesses strong financial capacity for factory construction, South Korea faces the challenge of securing the necessary reactors, transmission infrastructure, and public backing to power this industrial expansion.

Samsung welcomes Apple's folding iPhone, says weight is key to success

Samsung executives have welcomed Apple's entry into the foldable smartphone market, saying competition is "absolutely welcome" ahead of Apple's rumoured folding iPhone debut. The company attributes its success in the category to significant weight reduction, having cut 75 grams from its latest Galaxy Z Fold8 compared to the original model launched seven years ago. The Fold8 now weighs just 201 grams, lighter than Samsung's own Galaxy S26 Ultra candybar phone at 214 grams. Samsung achieved this by analysing approximately 270 components and 180 auxiliary parts, eliminating unnecessary elements and developing innovations like a 0.2-millimetre internal display support plate and "Flex Titanium" screen technology. Apple's folding iPhone, potentially called the iPhone Ultra, is expected to weigh between 230 and 241 grams.

Samsung's foldable phone sales grow 30% as Apple prepares to enter the market

Samsung's foldable phone sales grew 30% year-over-year in volume following the July launch of its Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8 devices, the company told Fortune. This follows roughly 30% growth last year, despite higher prices due to memory costs. The Korean electronics firm has sold foldable smartphones for seven years and holds 40% global market share in the category, according to Counterpoint Research. Foldable phones comprised less than 2% of the global smartphone market by unit sales last year. Samsung's new passport-style Galaxy Z Fold 8 accounts for 40% of foldable sales, with the high-end Z Fold Ultra 8 also claiming 40%. The $1,200 Z Flip 8 makes up the remaining 20%. Dave Das, executive vice president at Samsung Electronics America, said 25% more new Samsung customers switch from competitor smartphones for foldables compared to traditional bar-type phones.
