Marvell Technology's communications and other business segment is recovering as customer inventories normalise. In the first quarter of fiscal 2027, communications revenues increased 29% year over year to $585 million, driven by its AI data centre networking business. The company expects its interconnect business to grow more than 70% year over year in fiscal 2027. Management forecasts TIAs and drivers to exceed a $1 billion annualised run rate in coming quarters, with DCI module revenues reaching about $1 billion during fiscal 2028. However, Marvell's shift towards lower-margin custom silicon is causing gradual gross margin decline. The company expects its communications end market to decline mid-single digits sequentially in Q2 whilst growing high-single digits year over year. Marvell shares have rallied 157.3% year to date.
Semiconductor stocks rallied sharply on Tuesday, with the PHLX Semiconductor Index surging over 6% and helping push the S&P 500 to record highs. Marvell Technology led gains with a 14% jump, whilst Intel rose 10% and AMD gained 7% ahead of its quarterly results. US-listed shares of SK Hynix climbed 6% and Micron Technology added 8%. AI chip leader Nvidia gained nearly 2%. The rally followed Marvell's launch of new AI-optimised memory and storage infrastructure products at the Flash Memory Summit in California. The sector had previously tumbled more than 20% from recent highs amid concerns about excessive AI spending by hyperscalers and intensifying competition from China's less expensive AI models.
Marvell Technology now derives 76% of its revenue from data centres, up from 74% in the previous quarter. The company's guidance indicates this concentration will increase further, with data centre sales projected to grow about 50% in fiscal 2027 and 55% in fiscal 2028. Management expects cloud capital spending growth to moderate to around 30% in fiscal 2028 whilst planning for its own data centre revenue to accelerate to 55%. This assumes Marvell will capture a larger share of slowing spending growth. The bulk of revenue comes from the top four US hyperscalers. The stock trades at 18.5 times sales, in the top decile of its ten-year range, despite sitting 58% below its 52-week high of $316.35.
