Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing Program.
- Hold a current Michigan Registered Nurse license or complete licensing by the end of orientation.
- Hold current Basic Life Support certification for the Healthcare Provider or complete it within 60 days of hire.
- Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and service appropriate to the ages of patients served in the assigned area.
- For Spine/Orthopedics, hold Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification or complete it within one year of hire.
Responsibilities
- Provide and coordinate patient-centered care to achieve desired outcomes.
- Participate in patient and family teaching.
- Delegate and work cooperatively with ancillary nursing staff and other healthcare team members to maintain standards for professional nursing practice and performance in the clinical setting.
- Practice in accordance with the Michigan Public Health Code, Act 368 of 1978, Article 15, Part 172 (Nursing).
- Promote patient safety by following hospital and nursing department policies and procedures, including the Patient's Bill of Rights.
- Systematically enhance the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice.
- Maintain knowledge and competency reflecting current evidence-based nursing practice.
- Evaluate nursing practice against professional practice standards and guidelines, applicable statutes, rules, and regulations.
- Collaborate with patients, families, and other healthcare team members in nursing practice.
- Integrate ethical provisions into all areas of practice.
- Integrate evidence and research findings into practice.
- Use appropriate resources to plan and provide safe, effective, and financially responsible nursing services.
- Practice in an environmentally safe and healthy manner.
- Contribute to the professional development and training of peers, colleagues, and students.
- Demonstrate leadership in the profession and professional practice setting.
- Direct and supervise support personnel in delegated nursing activities.
- Participate in or support shared decision-making activities on a regular basis.
- Demonstrate awareness of and accountability for department and organization strategic goals and quality initiatives.
- Collect and document comprehensive, timely, and accurate patient health and situation data, including physiological, sociocultural, safety, and spiritual needs.
- Analyze assessment data using critical thinking to determine pertinent diagnoses or issues and respond appropriately to changing patient needs, including emergencies and life-threatening situations.
- Identify expected outcomes and develop and document individualized plans of care, incorporating the patient's significant other as appropriate and prescribing strategies and alternatives to achieve those outcomes.
- Identify initial and ongoing discharge-planning needs.
- Identify, evaluate, and document patient responses to care and coordinate care across the continuum to meet identified and anticipated patient and support-network needs.
- Advocate for patients and their significant others.
- Implement the identified plan of care while applying relevant professional performance standards.
- Prioritize care and adjust priorities based on patient and unit needs.
- Evaluate and document patient progress toward desired outcomes.
- Optimize patient learning by evaluating learning abilities and providing patient education.
Desired Qualifications
- Recent hospital experience and/or previous nursing practice experience.
- Two years of prior Registered Nurse experience in the desired specialty area.
- Prior experience with an electronic patient documentation system.
- Prior experience with technology common to the specialty area, such as cardiac monitors and intravenous pumps.
- Bilingual ability.
