Tue, May 12, 2026 Holland Hospital is the Only Hospital in West Michigan to Win the Award 18 Years in a Row (2009 - 2026) HOLLAND, Mich., May 12, 2026 - Holland Hospital today announces it is one of two hospitals in Michigan and one of only 25 in the United States to receive the Healthgrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award for 18 consecutive years. In 2026, Holland Hospital was among the top 5 percent of hospitals nationally for patient experience. Meanwhile, Holland Hospital is the only hospital in West Michigan to earn this recognition for 18 years in a row (2009-2026). Holland Hospital is among the top 10 percent of hospitals nationally during that time and reflects a long-standing commitment to compassionate, high-quality care delivered by its dedicated staff and providers. "We are honored to receive this recognition. Holland Hospital remains committed to delivering safe, high-quality care supported by an extraordinary team of professionals," said Holland Hospital President & CEO Patti VanDort. "Our teams work tirelessly to ensure patients feel heard, respected and cared for. This award is a testament to their dedication and to the meaningful connections they make with our patients every day." Reflecting its ongoing focus on safe, high-quality care, Holland Hospital's patient experience honors accompany other recent achievements, including being recognized by Healthgrades as the only hospital in Michigan to receive the Outpatient Joint Replacement Excellence Award and the Outpatient Orthopedic Surgery Excellence Award in 2026, and earning national recognition from the American Medical Association (AMA) as a 2025 Joy in Medicine(R) organization. Holland Hospital's superior workforce continues to be a driving force behind these impressive accomplishments. The hospital has earned West Michigan's Best & Brightest Companies to Work For award for 24 years in a row. Holland Hospital is the only hospital in West Michigan to receive a 5-star rating every year since 2016 when the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) began its rating system. Each year, Healthgrades recognizes the top hospitals nationwide that provide an exceptional experience for patients during their hospital stay. For its 2026 analysis, Healthgrades evaluated Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) patient survey data from nearly 4,000 hospitals across 10 patient experience measures. To determine the recipients of the Outstanding Patient Experience Award, Healthgrades applies a scoring methodology to ten patient experience measures. These measures reflect patients' perceptions of their care, including staff communication, medication explanations and cleanliness. Holland Hospital's award is the direct result of positive patient feedback in these areas. Consumers can visit healthgrades.com to learn more: Outstanding Patient Experience Award Methodology. Holland Hospital launches hyperbaric oxygen therapy, ending long trips for Lakeshore patients. HOLLAND, Mich. - Lakeshore residents who need advanced wound care now have access to hyperbaric oxygen therapy close to home, as Holland Hospital expands its Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine Program. The hospital this month unveiled a newly remodeled, state-of-the-art hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) suite, eliminating the need for patients to travel to Grand Rapids for treatment that can require up to two hours a day, five days a week, for six to eight weeks. "What it means for Holland Hospital, and maybe more importantly, the patients on the Lakeshore, is that they now have access to this treatment without having to drive 20, 30, or 40 miles every day, Monday through Friday," said Dr. Lee Ruotsi, the recently appointed Medical Director of Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine at Holland Hospital. The expansion was made possible in part by a donation from Priscilla Becker, whose late husband, Raymond, underwent hyperbaric therapy in Grand Rapids while receiving care from Holland Hospital's wound clinic. "Her husband was a patient of ours... and required hyperbaric chamber therapy. He and she had to drive back and forth to Grand Rapids every day for about two months," said Joe Bonello, Holland Hospital's vice president for clinical operations and chief nursing officer. HBOT involves exposure to pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber, which helps damaged tissue heal more quickly, fights infection and supports tissue repair. The therapy can treat pressure injuries (bedsores), diabetic foot ulcers, burns, radiation tissue damage, post-surgical wounds, vascular wounds and other chronic, hard-to-heal injuries. "Approximately 5% of patients who come to The Wound Center will ultimately become hyperbaric candidates," said Ruotsi. "We're not just going to be a hyperbaric center. We're going to be a comprehensive wound healing center that now has all the tools we need to treat a variety of conditions." Primary care provider referral is required for hyperbaric oxygen therapy. More information on Holland Hospital's Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine Program is available here.
