AI and digital spending keep surging - why healwell AI Inc. Class A (TSX:AIDX) HEALWELL AI is back on watchlists after reporting second-quarter results on 6 August 2026 that showcased a much larger, more recurring and finally near-breakeven business. The Toronto-based company, which pairs healthcare software with data-science and artificial-intelligence services, is positioning itself against a backdrop of rising digital-health spending - the theme its editorial headline captures. The key question is whether AIDX is turning scale into sustainable profitability. The latest quarter offers a mixed but improving answer. Second-quarter results. Revenue was C$33.0 million, essentially flat against C$33.2 million a year earlier. Over the first half, however, Revenue jumped about 60% to C$66.2 million from C$41.2 million, reflecting the April 2025 Acquisition of Orion Health, which now contributes across full periods. The comparison underlines how much of the group's recent expansion has come from dealmaking rather than underlying demand. Healthcare software generated C$31.0 million of second-quarter revenue, while data science and AI contributed C$2.0 million, down 28% year over year. Recurring Revenue - subscriptions, support and maintenance - reached C$43.4 million in the first half, up 76%. Gross Margin was 54%. Profitability and cash flow. Adjusted EBITDA was C$1.1 million in the quarter, down 51% from a year earlier, but first-half adjusted EBITDA of C$1.9 million marked a sharp improvement from a near-nil base. More telling, the first-half net loss narrowed to just C$0.45 million from C$16.4 million a year earlier, and operating Cash Flow swung to positive C$4.5 million from a C$9.9 million outflow. The company also disclosed a non-core Investment valued at roughly C$23 million as of 30 June 2026. Management is targeting an adjusted EBITDA margin of about 10% by year-end. Why it matters. The shift toward recurring software revenue, a stronger Balance Sheet and positive Operating Cash Flow are meaningful for a company that had been burning cash. If the year-end margin target is met, HEALWELL would move from an acquisition-driven growth story toward demonstrable operating leverage. A profitable, subscription-heavy software base would also reduce the company's reliance on external financing, a persistent concern for cash-consuming technology names. Sector context. HEALWELL operates in healthcare technology and preventive care, an area drawing sustained investment as health systems digitise records, adopt AI-assisted diagnostics and seek efficiency. The Orion Health deal added interoperability and health-information software with international reach. Competition is broad, spanning established electronic-health-record vendors and a wave of AI startups. Demand for tools that streamline clinical workflows and unlock value from health data remains a durable, if crowded, theme. Catalysts to watch. The clearest catalyst is progress toward the roughly 10% adjusted EBITDA margin target, alongside continued Orion integration and cross-selling. A recovery in the higher-margin data-science and AI segment, further recurring-revenue growth and any new contract wins would support the thesis. Key risks. Headline revenue was flat, and the data-science and AI line - central to the company's branding - fell 28%, a notable soft spot. The Business has grown largely through acquisition, which carries integration and financing risk, and the group is not yet consistently profitable on a net basis. As a small-cap technology name, the shares can be volatile, and the value of the disclosed non-core investment could fluctuate. Conclusion. HEALWELL AI's second quarter showed a company that has scaled sharply through acquisition, built a large recurring-revenue base and moved close to breakeven, while its named growth engine - data science and AI - actually shrank in the period. The investment case now rests on hitting the year-end margin target and reigniting AI-driven growth. For investors watching Canadian technology and digital-health spending, AIDX is a name where execution over the next two quarters will decide whether the improvement sticks.
