Responsibilities
  • Verify specimen identification against physicians' orders, prepare specimens for testing, and handle specimens safely.
  • Analyze test results and interpret abnormal or unusual results.
  • Research and prepare pertinent patient data and refer data and testing results to pathologists for evaluation and sign-out.
  • Calibrate equipment, order supplies, maintain inventories of forms and materials, recognize test inconsistencies, and take corrective action.
  • Administer quality-control tests according to procedure and maintain appropriate data records.
  • Assist with orienting and training employees on laboratory techniques and operations.
  • Perform routine pretransfusion testing and antibody identification procedures.
  • Produce reliable and accurate Blood Bank test results within the appropriate turnaround time.
  • Prepare blood components, including thawed fresh frozen plasma and cryoprecipitate.
  • Plan and prioritize workload and complete orders logically.
  • Check and finalize all pending work before the end of the shift.
  • Perform, report, and evaluate quality-control testing and equipment-maintenance tasks.
  • Operate Blood Bank equipment and instrumentation, troubleshoot failures, and coordinate service for repairs.
  • Maintain adequate inventory levels while minimizing reagent and blood-product wastage.
  • Participate in the proficiency-testing program.
  • Reconcile packing slips with quantities ordered and received and resolve discrepancies.
  • Maintain hardware by changing paper, labels, and printer ribbons as necessary.
  • Follow Administration, Environmental of Care, CHP, Safety, Infection Control, and Laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Complete projects assigned by the Supervisor or Manager.
  • Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets.
