About the job

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, a relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience building, operating, or debugging large-scale compute infrastructure, including significant staff- or principal-level experience owning cross-team technical direction.
  • Hands-on experience running real AI compute jobs at scale, including pre-training, fine-tuning, or large-scale inference of open-source or proprietary models.
  • Practical familiarity with distributed training strategies including data, tensor, pipeline, and expert parallelism, and with frameworks such as PyTorch, Megatron-LM, or DeepSpeed.
  • Experience validating and accepting large clusters containing thousands of GPUs for performance and reliability, with command of benchmark methodology and the ability to defend performance results to engineers and customers.
  • Ability to diagnose distributed performance problems including stragglers, collective stalls, link flaps, thermal throttling, silent data corruption, ECC and Xid errors, noisy-neighbor issues, and storage-bound bottlenecks.
  • Experience using NCCL debug tracing, Nsight Systems, Nsight Compute, PyTorch Profiler, perf, and fabric telemetry.
  • Deep understanding of high-performance fabrics including InfiniBand or RoCEv2, RDMA, GPUDirect, adaptive routing, congestion control, rail-optimized topologies, TCP/IP, and BGP.
  • Deep Linux systems expertise covering kernel tunables, NUMA, PCIe, IRQ behavior, and memory behavior.
  • Strong production Python skills and experience with C/C++ or Go and configuration-management tooling such as Ansible or Terraform.
  • Experience operating and debugging AI workloads under SLURM or Kubernetes at scale.
Responsibilities
  • Define the technical meaning of healthy at scale and set the architecture, roadmap, acceptance criteria, and performance bar for multi-thousand-GPU clusters before and after customer handover.
  • Establish technology and product direction in collaboration with technical leads, managers, and senior leadership.
  • Run and instrument distributed training and inference jobs across thousands of accelerators and translate diagnostic results into fleet-wide fixes.
  • Lead diagnosis of large-scale cluster failures and performance regressions across firmware, PCIe/NVLink topology, NUMA placement, InfiniBand/RoCE fabric health, congestion control, routing, storage, data-loader throughput, scheduler placement, and framework or communication-library behavior.
  • Serve as the final escalation point for difficult slow-job and stalled-job investigations.
  • Design and build validation and burn-in systems that qualify nodes, racks, and full pods at scale, including collective sweeps, HPL/HPCG and MLPerf-style benchmarks, thermal and power soak tests, and straggler and flapping-link detection.
  • Automate qualification as a repeatable pipeline rather than a manual campaign.
  • Optimize clusters end to end by tuning fabric configuration, collective communication libraries, algorithm selection, GPUDirect RDMA and storage paths, and host-level settings.
  • Partner with Infrastructure, Platform, SRE, and customer-facing teams to translate operational and customer performance needs into durable engineering solutions and feed diagnostic signals into provisioning, remediation, and capacity workflows.
  • Build production-grade Python systems and performance tooling for automated triage, telemetry correlation, and regression detection.
  • Assess the impact of new hardware product programs on the software and validation stack and explore AI-driven process improvement and automation.
  • Establish engineering standards for reliability, observability, benchmarking methodology, and operational excellence across services.
  • Improve the wider organization's diagnostic capability through mentorship, runbooks, and post-incident technical write-ups.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • Experience bringing up and qualifying a greenfield GPU supercluster from its first rack to production traffic, including firmware, driver, and topology standardization across a heterogeneous fleet.
  • Direct experience with NVIDIA GPU platforms such as H200, GB200, or GB300, NVLink, NVSwitch, DCGM, SHARP, UFM, and the NVIDIA software stack, or equivalent depth with AMD Instinct and ROCm/RCCL.
  • Published or presented benchmark, scaling, or post-mortem work, including MLPerf submissions, scaling studies, or public technical write-ups on large-cluster behavior.
  • Experience with Prometheus, Grafana, and OpenTelemetry for high-cardinality GPU and fabric telemetry, including automated anomaly and regression detection.
  • Experience with high-throughput parallel storage such as Lustre, GPFS, WEKA, or VAST and with diagnosing data-pipeline-bound training jobs.
  • Familiarity with cloud-native technologies including Kubernetes and Docker, infrastructure-as-code principles, and infrastructure tooling such as DCIMs, NetBox, MAAS, Ironic, IPMI, and Redfish.
  • Ability to integrate AI tools to optimize or redesign workflows and produce measurable efficiency or quality improvements.
  • Familiarity with SLOs, metrics measurement, and logs, telemetry, and metrics integration for improved operator experience.

Microsoft exits Nscale's UK data centre as grid delays push power to the 2030s

Microsoft has pulled out of a planned AI data centre in Loughton, Essex, that British cloud provider Nscale was building for it, Reuters reported on October 18, citing the Telegraph. Microsoft is one of Nscale's two largest customers and declined to comment. The reason for the withdrawal was not specified. Power looks like the problem. Grid officials reportedly told Nscale they did not expect to supply electricity until the 2030s. Nscale says it remains committed to the site and is exploring other power sources. The site was to house about 23,000 Nvidia chips, roughly 11.5% of a 200,000-chip programme. Microsoft's June-quarter cash capital expenditure was $35.80 billion, more than double a year earlier. The exit hurts Nscale more: its IPO filing lists Microsoft agreements worth up to $43.8 billion.
