Requirements
  • A combination of education, training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities is required for Recreation Leader I/II.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license may be required depending on assignment.
  • If the position requires driving a mini-bus or van, a valid California Class B license with passenger endorsement and the allowable auto transmission and air brake restrictions must be obtained within six months of employment; drug-testing is required according to the Department of Transportation (DOT).
  • If assigned to Sailing/Kayaking/Stand-up Paddle Boarding programs, CPR and First Aid certifications are required.
  • Recreation Specialist requires a combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and sufficient work experience in the specialty area.
  • A valid California Class C driver's license may be required depending on assignment for Recreation Specialist; if driving a mini-bus or van is required, obtain Class B license within six months; DOT drug-testing may be required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide site supervision or act as an attendant monitoring and overseeing a variety of youth and adult sporting events, including basketball, softball, volleyball, soccer, and flag football; duties may include scorekeeping, scheduling, communicating with staff and participants, cash management (deposits), and completing related reports.
  • Provide on-site supervision, instruction, and support with sailing, kayaking, and stand-up paddle boarding; may assist with maintenance and upkeep of necessary equipment; must possess CPR and First Aid certifications.
  • Coordinate and support Youth After School & Camp Programs; coordinate after school enrichment activities at school sites; provide homework assistance; organize day-to-day activities including sports, games, and special programs; may develop curriculum and provide instruction related to sports, enrichment, music, or dance; May support youth soccer, basketball, and flag football leagues.
  • Arts & Culture Programs duties including customer service, data entry, clerical duties, facility rental oversight; support with Historic Programs (Olivas Adobe), Public Art Tours, Special Events, Cultural Arts Classes, Arts & Culture Tour Program; Tour Bus Driver responsibilities including transportation and travel documentation; knowledge of wheelchair accessibility and mechanical lifts is desirable.
  • Seniors & Community Service Programs duties including Facility Attendant responsibilities, Community Gardens maintenance, Volunteer Programs operations, Senior Nutrition Program support, Customer Service Representative tasks.
  • Additional duties may include traveling to game or tour locations; working night, weekend, and holiday shifts; operating city vehicles for program transportation.
Desired Qualifications
  • General knowledge of wheelchairs and mechanical lifts is desirable.
  • Weekend availability for Special Events; flexibility to work non-traditional hours.
  • Experience coordinating and leading arts and culture tours, public art program operations, or event planning experience in a community recreation context.
