About the Job

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in Engineering or an appropriate STEM field is required.
  • Preferred candidates have relevant experience in a temporary student employment environment, such as an internship, co-op, or other extracurricular team activity, or as an early-career professional in a relevant technical discipline area.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office tools is preferred.
  • The position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Apply chemical principles to create and develop product functionalities integrated and sold into Cummins products.
  • Research, design, analyze, test, and perform failure analysis on chemical-based products, including catalysts, substrates, sensors, batteries, and fuel cells.
  • Own problem resolution for moderately complex components, products, systems, subsystems, or services, with technical complexity and ambiguity increasing as experience is gained.
  • Independently execute established work processes and systems while developing technology or product knowledge, and engage in improving systems and processes.
  • Coordinate and direct the work of technicians and/or interns when needed.
  • Contribute to team goals and develop proficiency in competency areas critical to success in the role.
  • Design and construct laboratory equipment to simulate aging exposures relevant to practical applications of active chemical components, including thermal cycling, chemical poisoning, and physical masking.
  • Design and conduct tests of physicochemical properties, including morphology, acid-base and redox properties, diffusion characteristics, impedance behaviors, solubility, and chemical poisoning, to support diagnostics and performance and health prediction for chemically active components.
  • Design tests measuring chemical transformation of species, selectivity, electric yield, and responses to chemical and physical environments to determine performance, durability, or state of health of chemically or electrochemically active components.
  • Examine and interpret test data using analysis methods to draw conclusions that influence hardware and controls design decisions and inform computational tool development.
  • Use or interpret computational tools and methods to predict product functional capability relative to system, subsystem, and component requirements, informing product design decisions.
  • Solve product problems using a customer-protective process; determine assignable causes; implement robust, data-based solutions; and identify systemic root causes and recommended actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Develop product systems validation plans from varied inputs to identify failure modes while managing product risk and relative priority.
  • Negotiate product requirements against capability to guide project scope; evaluate analytical, simulation, and physical test results to verify product capability and validate requirements; assess legacy versus proposed system solution capabilities; and document recommendations supporting product decisions.
  • Define the system of interest, its boundaries, environmental context, interfaces, lifecycle, problem statement, scope, and deliverables; analyze relationships and interactions among system elements using appropriate methods, models, and integrated outcomes to predict behavior and devise modifications that produce desired effects.
  • Document knowledge gained through technical activities and communicate it to stakeholders to improve technical productivity and transfer knowledge to people not involved in the initial learning.

Desired Qualifications

  • Catalyst research experience, such as experience with DOC, DPF, SCR, and ASC for engine exhaust gas aftertreatment, is a plus.
  • A relevant postgraduate master's degree may be required for select roles.
