Requirements
  • A Ph.D. in computer science, computer engineering, data science, or a related area is required.
  • At least two years of experience in artificial intelligence, which may be gained during Ph.D. studies.
  • At least two years of experience in biomedical data analysis, preferably in vision and ophthalmology, which may be gained during Ph.D. studies.
  • Programming proficiency in Python and R, with knowledge of Google TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, Keras, or related deep learning libraries.
  • Experience collecting, organizing, and analyzing electronic health record and imaging data.
  • Experience analyzing genetic and genomic data.
  • Knowledge of working with big datasets.
  • Knowledge of developing emerging artificial intelligence models, including deep convolutional neural networks, Transformers, large language models, vision-language models, and foundation models.
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
  • Ability to learn new procedures, technologies, and protocols and adapt to changing priorities and work demands.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others and contribute to a team environment.
  • Technical proficiency with office software, technology, and relevant computer applications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for interacting with colleagues and stakeholders.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct research in assigned specific areas of study.
  • Prepare research reports and technical papers for publication.
  • Investigate the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and theories.
  • Maintain substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories.
  • Develop advanced analytical models and systems and provide solutions and analyses to support strategic and tactical decisions.
  • Develop machine learning and data-mining models, including deep convolutional neural networks, Transformers, large language models, and vision-language models.
  • Develop retrieval-augmented generation models and agentic artificial intelligence systems.
  • Develop manifold-learning methods, including t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding and Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection, and unsupervised clustering to identify disease phenotypes.
  • Analyze electronic health record data and retinal imaging, including fundus photographs, fundus autofluorescence, optical coherence tomography, visual fields, full-field electroretinograms, and genetic data, for automated screening, diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of major eye diseases.
  • Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets.
Desired Qualifications
  • Biomedical data analysis experience in vision and ophthalmology is preferred.
