Requirements
  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
  • Successfully complete organization, unit, and job-specific competencies within a 90-day orientation period; orientation may be extended by up to 30 additional days at the manager’s discretion.
  • Read and interpret surgical schedules, sterilizer printouts, instructions for use, policies, procedures, and other written communications.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally in person, by telephone, and through the intercom system.
  • Accurately perform basic arithmetic with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions.
  • Use computer programs including email, instrument-tracking programs, computer-based learning applications, and internet searches.
  • Learn and retain knowledge of surgical instrumentation, medical terminology, human anatomy, sterilization practices, basic microbiology, and aseptic technique.
  • Learn and apply the technical aspects of the position, including hand-eye coordination, color differentiation, hearing comprehension, manual dexterity, and operation of cleaning, decontamination, disinfection, assembly, inspection, and sterilization equipment; routinely lift up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift, push, pull, or move bulky or awkward items or items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Rotate to all areas of the Sterile Processing/Central Services Department.
  • Simultaneously manage stressful situations and multiple job tasks calmly and professionally.
  • Provide consistent customer service to stakeholders.
  • Manage confidential and sensitive information, including knowledge of HIPAA and other applicable regulations and laws.
Responsibilities
  • Receive, handle, and process contaminated reusable medical instrumentation and equipment.
  • Accurately inspect, test, and prepare basic surgical instrumentation for sterilization.
  • Use sterilization methods and follow the safety processes for each method.
  • Properly store and distribute sterile instrumentation, supplies, equipment, case carts, exchange carts, and other items.
  • Conduct accurate inventory and restock areas as required.
  • Receive materials, instruments, and tissue according to established protocols.
  • Monitor dated materials, remove expired items from inventory, and obtain appropriate credit.
  • Use computer systems to complete work responsibilities.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Ensure patient safety and comfort at all times.
  • Accurately document work tasks and related activities, including continuing education credits as required.
  • Participate in continuing education, staff meetings, and in-service educational offerings to meet position requirements and remain compliant with hospital, Joint Commission, and other regulatory or accrediting agencies.
  • Assume responsibility for personal and professional growth and development.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of surgical instrumentation, medical terminology, human anatomy, aseptic technique, microbiology and infection control practices, and disinfection and sterilization practices.
  • Completion of a Central Services Technology Program or six months of experience in a Sterile Processing/Central Services environment.
