Ramboll-designed sediment management facility advances Milwaukee Estuary clean-up. The Port Milwaukee facility will store contaminated sediments removed from the Milwaukee, Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic Rivers. Contact its expert Sector Lead, Ports, Transportation & Infrastructure The new Dredged Material Management Facility (DMMF) in Milwaukee, WI, designed by Ramboll, is now complete, marking a major milestone in the restoration of the Milwaukee Estuary to support the long-term cleanup of contaminated sediments. The facility advances efforts to remove the Milwaukee Estuary from the USEPA's Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOC) list. The 42-acre facility, owned and operated by Port Milwaukee, will hold contaminated sediments removed from the Milwaukee, Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic Rivers. The facility has the capacity to store material equivalent to approximately 13 football fields filled to a depth of 50 feet. "The completion of the DMMF is the cumulation of the hard work and expertise of numerous stakeholders who want to see the restored as healthier, more resilient waterways that support ecological, recreational, and commercial uses," said Adam Tindall-Schlicht, Sector Leader for Ports, Transportation, and Infrastructure at Ramboll in the Americas. "Having a dedicated facility to safely contain contaminated sediment will result in cleaner waters and help advance the long-term vitality of the region's port infrastructure." The Milwaukee Estuary has long faced environmental challenges associated with legacy contamination in river and harbor sediments. These contaminants have affected water quality, aquatic ecosystems, and community health, making sediment remediation a critical component of ongoing restoration efforts. The new DMMF provides the infrastructure needed to safely manage materials generated through both environmental remediation and routine dredging operations across the estuary. "The DMMF reflects Ramboll's commitment to applying advanced engineering solutions to some of the most challenging environmental issues facing our waterways," said Craig M Harley, Senior Technical Manager at Ramboll. "Our design integrates innovative hydraulic controls and containment infrastructure to safely manage contaminated sediments, protect surrounding water resources, and provide lasting protection for the Milwaukee Estuary long into the future." Ramboll partnered with MMSD and other key stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle, providing alternatives analysis, engineering design, permitting support, bid assistance, and construction-phase services. The multidisciplinary effort included structural and geotechnical engineering, site civil engineering, dredging and sediment analysis, and preparation of construction documents and technical specifications. The DMMF was developed through a partnership led by MMSD, the City of Milwaukee, Port Milwaukee, USEPA, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Milwaukee County, and other stakeholders.

Ramboll advances five Wastewater Treatment projects to help restore Norway's Oslofjord. Projects target nitrogen and micropollutants through plant upgrades, biological treatment, advanced modelling and regional infrastructure planning. Ramboll is working with partners on five wastewater initiatives aimed at improving the environmental condition of Oslofjorden. Ramboll is collaborating with Norwegian municipalities, wastewater utilities and specialist partners across five projects intended to improve Oslofjorden's environmental condition. The initiatives cover nitrogen removal at Bekkelaget, micropollutant treatment planning for Oslo, an Aerated Membrane Bioreactor pilot at Søndre Follo, a proposed centralised facility at Tofte and upgrades to Rambekk. Reported outcomes include 80% nitrogen-removal performance at Bekkelaget, while other results remain proposals, studies or pilot-stage expectations. (PRESS RELEASE) OSLO, Norway, 12-Oct-2026 - /EuropaWire/ - Ramboll is working with water utilities, municipalities and specialist partners on five projects to improve wastewater treatment and support the recovery of Oslofjorden in Norway. The initiatives address nitrogen discharges and micropollutants through upgrades to existing plants, studies of new treatment facilities and trials of emerging technologies. Years of nutrient pollution, including nitrogen, have severely reduced oxygen levels in the fjord. Fish populations are nearly depleted, the lower growth limit for seaweed has declined, and algal blooms and slime are displacing other organisms. Wastewater treatment plant discharges remain a significant source of pollution, making improvements to treatment processes an important part of efforts to restore the fjord. Municipalities and treatment operators are preparing for stricter EU wastewater discharge rules covering discharge volumes and acceptable levels of nitrogen and micropollutants. The urgency is underscored by a recently published assessment of Oslofjorden's condition by the Norwegian Institute for Water Research. "Nitrogen from sewage and agriculture together accounts for around 75 percent of the nitrogen that flows into the Oslo Fjord. Therefore, it's very positive that a lot of municipalities are now actively working on plans for improving wastewater treatment, and that stricter requirements are in place for farmers to reduce ploughing of grain fields in the fall." Ellen Hambro, Environmental Director in the Norwegian Environment Agency, said. Ramboll's work involves external partner Holinger and clients Søndre Follo Wastewater Treatment Plant (SFR), Vestfjorden Wastewater Treatment Plant (VEAS), Oslo Municipality, Gørvik Municipality and Vestre Toten Municipality. Together, they are exploring and implementing technologies intended to improve treatment performance. Improved nitrogen removal at Bekkelaget wastewater treatment plant. Ramboll completed a full-scale nitrogen-removal improvement project at Bekkelaget Wastewater Treatment Plant in 2025. The facility is now exceeding the 75% nitrogen-removal requirement, with results to date indicating treatment performance of 80% and the removal of 1,129 tonnes of nitrogen. The programme involved examining existing plant operations, improving management approaches, evaluating new technologies and undertaking pilot trials. Alongside full-scale pilot testing, Ramboll specialists developed a digital model of the treatment process to simulate and assess possible improvements ahead of implementation. The project received Ramboll's sustainability prize in 2025. Preparing micropollutant treatment for Oslo Municipality. Although formal requirements have not yet been introduced, Oslo Municipality is investigating how a new treatment plant could remove micropollutants from wastewater discharges. Ramboll is reviewing available treatment technologies and preparing the facility's preliminary design. Because these technologies have seldom been applied in this setting and recent Norwegian experience in micropollutant removal is limited, Ramboll is collaborating with Swiss engineering company Holinger, drawing on its experience in this field. Developing a new nitrogen-removal approach with Søndre Follo. Søndre Follo Wastewater Treatment Plant (SFR) is taking steps to prepare for nitrogen removal ahead of any formal requirement affecting the utility. Its objective is to help protect Oslofjorden through a sustainable and cost-efficient approach using newer technologies. Ramboll is supporting SFR with preparations for nitrogen-removal capability and an ongoing pilot involving an Aerated Membrane Bioreactor. If testing is successful, the team anticipates a substantial reduction in energy consumption, potentially to just 10% of the energy normally required for nitrogen removal. Assessing a centralised treatment facility for Oslofjorden. Working with VEAS, Ramboll led a feasibility study into consolidating wastewater discharges from treatment plants along the fjord at a larger facility in Tofte, in the outer Oslofjord. The study indicated that the proposal could deliver significant socio-economic savings, nitrogen-removal efficiency exceeding 90%, and micropollutant removal. Ramboll subsequently advanced the concept to give municipalities a basis for deciding whether to participate. The work was undertaken in collaboration with Norconsult, Cowi, NIVA and DHI, with an emphasis on quality assurance and impartial decision-making. The concept study was completed in May 2025. Preparing Rambekk for new nitrogen-removal requirements. North of the Oslofjord, Gjøvik and Vestre Toten municipalities are planning a joint approach to future nitrogen-removal requirements. Ramboll is helping develop a proposal for an additional biological treatment stage at Rambekk Wastewater Treatment Plant in Gjøvik. The scope also includes a cost estimate for a transfer pipeline from Breiskallen Wastewater Treatment Plant in Vestre Toten to Rambekk and an assessment of future sludge-treatment options at Rambekk. Ramboll's team combines civil engineering, architecture, technical engineering, geotechnical and environmental expertise. Its findings will be assembled into a preliminary design report intended to support political decision-making by the municipalities. Further information.
