How Accenture and osapiens Prep DS Smith for EUDR.

How Accenture and osapiens Prep DS Smith for EUDR. September 29, 2026 Matias Pollmann-Larsen, Global Risk lead at Accenture, says DS Smith's supply chain overhaul spans 250 plants in 30 countries Accenture and osapiens have worked with DS Smith, a leading international sustainable packaging company, to trace the origin and movement of European Union Deforestation Regulation of relevant materials across its Europe, Middle East and Africa supply chain. The programme covers more than 250 plants and facilities in more than 30 countries. Together, Accenture and osapiens aim to give DS Smith clear, auditable proof of where the materials in its packaging come from, ahead of the regulation's enforcement. Matias Pollmann-Larsen, Global Risk, Resilience and Sustainable Value Chain lead at Accenture, says: "What DS Smith has done with Accenture and osapiens is build the data foundation needed to stay ahead of these challenges, rather than simply responding to the next regulation when it arrives." Key facts: DS Smith's EUDR Programme * Accenture and osapiens have partnered with DS Smith to trace EUDR-relevant materials across its supply chain * The programme spans more than 250 plants and facilities in over 30 countries * Nearly 25,000 supply chain workflows are now managed through the osapiens HUB platform * Suppliers are onboarded digitally, with compliance data managed through one centralised system * Wood fibre, DS Smith's principal material, falls within EUDR's scope alongside commodities like cocoa and palm oil Inside DS Smith's EUDR traceability programme. DS Smith, Accenture and osapiens reviewed sourcing, manufacturing, logistics and sales processes across the company's EMEA operations. Sakis Miliotis, IT director for Paper, Paper Supply Chain, Recycling and Sustainability at DS Smith, says: "Working with Accenture and osapiens, we have built something that works at scale." Accenture drove process transformation, supplier enablement, systems integration and programme scaling, while osapiens supplied the technology platform behind the initiative. Previously separate supply chain systems, onboarding and reporting processes were consolidated onto a single platform, the osapiens HUB. Nearly 25,000 supply chain workflows are now managed through the osapiens HUB platform. Suppliers are onboarded digitally, with traceability and compliance data managed through one centralised system. The company can trace EUDR-relevant materials from origin through production and distribution. The work establishes a foundation for DS Smith to meet future sustainability and product compliance requirements beyond EUDR itself. Working with Accenture and osapiens, Supply Chain Digital has built something that works at scale Sakis Miliotis, IT director for Paper, Paper Supply Chain, Recycling and Sustainability at DS Smith Deforestation rules and compliance. Under the EU Deforestation Regulation, large and medium operators and traders must comply from 30 December 2026, with most smaller enterprises given until 30 June 2027. The rules require a Due Diligence Statement for every product batch, submitted through the EU's TRACES system. Each batch must include GPS-verified geolocation of all plots, supplier documentation and a deforestation risk assessment. "Nearly 80% of supply chain leaders tell us that uncertain geopolitical regulatory requirements have made operating their businesses more difficult over the past six months. That pressure is not going away," says Matias. Meeting these requirements is a key focus for businesses, as non-compliance carries a minimum fine of 4% of a company's annual EU turnover. Operators sourcing from higher-risk countries face stricter punishments, with authorities required to inspect at least 9% of relevant operators by volume in those cases. According to Kolvita, around 30% of upstream actors currently have traceability systems in place capable of meeting the regulation's plot-level requirements. Incomplete or inaccurate geolocation data is one of the most common reasons for the rejection of due diligence statements. DS Smith's own commodity exposure, principally wood fibre for its packaging, sits squarely within EUDR's scope, alongside cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soya and cattle. Key companies. DS Smith proposes £20m Kemsley investment and closure of PM4.

DS Smith proposes £20m Kemsley investment and closure of PM4. DS Smith has proposed a £20m investment at its Kemsley Paper Mill in Kent, UK, alongside the closure of PM4, which could result in redundancies at the site. Under the proposals, DS Smith would invest £20m in PM6 to modernise and expand its capabilities, enabling the machine to produce new paper grades at increased production volumes. The company said the changes reflect evolving conditions within the paper and packaging market and are intended to improve the mill's competitiveness and ability to meet customer requirements. The proposed closure of PM4 would affect the number of roles required at Kemsley, although the number of potential redundancies has not yet been confirmed. Consultation with employees and union representatives is underway. "We are announcing a significant investment proposal for the Kemsley Paper Mill to ensure we are delivering the right products to our customers and remain cost competitive," said Rogier Gerritsen, Managing Director of Paper. "At the same time, we recognise how difficult part of these proposals will be for some of our colleagues and our immediate focus is on supporting them through a formal consultation process." The latest proposal follows a £48m investment announced in 2024 to upgrade the mill's fibre preparation line.

More than 160 jobs lost as vital Cornwall employer announces closure.

More than 160 jobs lost as vital Cornwall employer announces closure. After five months of limbo, DS Smith has confirmed that it will be ceasing production at its Launceston site Thursday 3 rd September 2026 10:31 am SPREAD THE NEWS The employer has been operating in the town for more than 50 years (Iliffe Cornwall) FOLLOWING months of discussions, one of Launceston's biggest employers has officially announced its closure. After announcing back in April that it's Launceston site could be set for closure, packaging and paper production company DS Smith has confirmed that it will be closing the location, resulting in the loss of 165 jobs. DS Smith is one of the UK's leaders in innovative corrugated packaging. The North Cornwall town has been fortunate enough to benefit from investment through the years from this big employer. Today, the site processes 28,000 tonnes of paper a year and provides employment for hundreds of local employees. In 2019, the company celebrated 50 years of production within the town, however, the organisation's announcement means this history will be coming to an end as part of efforts to 'improve efficiencies'. ADVERTISING The initial announcement earlier in the year resulted in concern among locals, with many worried about the impact this could have on the town. Get your latest local news for free in your email inbox Hayley Sanders, the partner of one of the site's employees said: "DS Smith have been running within Launceston for almost 60 years, they provide over 160 jobs within the local community, they also use other local businesses within Launceston that the closure could also impact. "Behind every job is a family that the workers are trying hard to support, especially in the current climate we are in. This could cause devastating impacts on families within our community." However, despite concern and even local protests, the organisation has gone ahead with the plans, with production set to come to an end in November. A spokesperson from DS Smith told us: "We can confirm that the consultation with employees and employee representatives at Launceston has concluded and, after careful consideration of counter proposals raised, the business has made the difficult decision to confirm the proposed closure of the site with the loss of 165 jobs. Production at the site will finish in November 2026." The company has said that it is committed to supporting its employees during this time, 'recognising the impact the change will have on them, their families, and the wider community.' Also in the news The spokesperson concluded: "We recognise that this decision is disappointing for those impacted. We are fully committed to supporting all our employees throughout this period, recognising the impact the change will have on them, their families, and the wider community."
