Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent to United States education is required.
- Graduation from an accredited phlebotomy training program is required.
- X-ray training is required.
- CPR and Basic Life Support certification are required.
Responsibilities
- Perform phlebotomy, waived tests, automated complete blood counts, electrocardiograms, and spirometry, and assist in the diagnostic and treatment of patients.
- Maintain laboratory reports and logs and process specimens for outside referrals.
- Assist the Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist when necessary.
- Follow universal precautions during blood drawing, handling, preservation, and transportation of body fluids; keep the area clean and disinfected; dispose of contaminated material properly; and use personal protective equipment.
- Follow Occupational Safety and Health Administration safety regulations and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act privacy regulations.
- Greet patients and communicate with them to keep them calm and still.
- Identify patients by name and date of birth, label tubes, follow collection timing, and verify patient address details.
- Collect blood and other human-fluid specimens by venipuncture and capillary methods using the proper collection tubes, and provide clear patient instructions.
- Verify test orders in the electronic health record.
- Follow written policies and procedures for quality assurance and quality control to provide accurate and reliable test results and reports.
- Document temperatures, preventive maintenance activities, procedures, quality control, and quality assurance.
- Follow the laboratory manual, safety procedures, and infection-control procedures.
- Maintain constant contact with providers and nurses regarding patient care.
- Restock reagents, request replacement supplies from the referral laboratory, and verify reagent expiration dates.
- Protect the privacy and security of personal health information and follow Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments regulations.
- Assist support personnel across various departments as requested and work overtime as necessary.
- Prepare the room and patient for electrocardiogram testing while maintaining modesty and dignity.
- Apply electrodes and operate the electrocardiogram machine according to manufacturer instructions to obtain proper tracings.
- Identify the patient, register them in the monitor, label the tracing, and consult the provider when unusual circumstances affect the test.
- Maintain and store electrocardiogram equipment and work with the manufacturer to troubleshoot it.
- Verify electrocardiogram orders in the electronic health record.
- Calibrate spirometry equipment every 24 hours or on the day of use.
- Prepare patients and conduct spirometry testing according to manufacturer instructions and laboratory procedures.
- Report accurate spirometry results to a licensed provider.
- Maintain and store spirometry equipment and work with the manufacturer to troubleshoot it.
- Verify test orders in the electronic health record.
- Draw blood and follow specimen-processing instructions.
- Process specimens according to reference-laboratory guidelines.
- Track and review test results in the electronic health record daily.
- Communicate with providers, clinic staff, and the reference laboratory to support smooth department operations.
Desired Qualifications
- A minimum of one year of experience in a hospital or clinic setting is desired.
- Bilingual ability in English and Spanish is highly desirable.
