About the job

Requirements
  • Must have a PhD before commencing the role.
  • Demonstrate expertise in theoretical research, particularly focused on Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) systems for quantum information applications, substantiated by publication history.
  • Have strong programming and code/data organization skills for efficient and reproducible numerical simulations.
  • Be proficient in verbal and written English communication; Japanese proficiency is not mandatory.
  • Be able to work cohesively in an interdisciplinary team and adjust to a rapidly evolving environment.
Responsibilities
  • Engage in both independent and collaborative research in Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) physics, focusing on quantum information applications.
  • Develop scalable architectures for neutral-atom Quantum Processing Units (QPUs) with cavity Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) atom-light interfaces, towards distributed quantum computing and quantum communications, in close collaboration with NanoQT’s FTQC/Quantum Information team, including high-rate QEC specialists.
  • Develop and/or optimize protocols for fast and high-fidelity neutral-atom qubit operations, both in free space and in optical cavities.
  • Propose novel applications of neutral atom and cavity QED systems for quantum communications, quantum sensing, analog quantum simulations, and other emerging quantum technologies.
  • Publish results in peer-reviewed academic journals.
  • Contribute to the design and optimization of nanofiber cavity QED and free-space neutral atom hardware, working closely with NanoQT’s hardware team of cold-atom and cavity QED experimentalists.
Desired Qualifications
  • Have in-depth knowledge of cavity QED and/or neutral atoms for quantum information applications.
  • Have basic knowledge in fault-tolerant quantum computing and quantum communication.
  • Have a leading role in collaborative research projects with experimentalists.

About the company

NanoQT develops quantum hardware that uses nanofiber cavity QED to connect atoms and photons in an all-fiber system. Its fiber-connected Quantum Processing Unit acts as both a quantum processor and a quantum repeater/interconnect, enabling high-fidelity links over existing fiber networks. The device uses neutral atoms as qubits and photons as information carriers to enable distributed quantum computing via a fiber-based atom–photon interface. Its goal is to enable ultra-secure, long-distance quantum communications by tying together quantum processors across global telecom networks.

What believers are saying

  • NanoQT closed a $14 million Series A on September 24, 2025.
  • UMD and Maryland support NanoQT's College Park expansion with Global Gateway and MIPS funding.
  • NEDO backs NanoQT's quantum repeater work and NIST network trials through July 2025.

What critics are saying

  • Distributed quantum computing remains unproven; NanoQT must deliver a working demo after 2025.
  • NanoQT depends on government grants, including NEDO's JPY 492 million program through 2025FY.
  • IonQ and other quantum firms in Maryland compete for the same talent, contracts, and pilots.

What makes NanoQT unique

  • NanoQT's nanofiber cavity-QED interconnect targets neutral-atom QPUs over standard fiber links.
  • Mitsubishi Electric launched a joint trial with NanoQT on April 24, 2025.
  • QuEra collaboration lets NanoQT test networking interfaces on an established neutral-atom QPU.
