About the job

Requirements
  • At least 10 years of experience in build/release, CI/CD, or test automation engineering, with games shipped across platforms.
  • Expert-level experience with a game engine such as Unreal, Unity, or a proprietary studio engine.
  • Demonstrated cross-team impact through initiatives that changed how multiple teams build, test, or ship software.
  • Experience architecting GitHub Actions CI/CD and build infrastructure scaled across project teams or studios.
  • Deep Git expertise at scale, including large repositories and Git Large File Storage, branching strategy, and source control migrations.
  • Deep C#/.NET and/or C++ experience across build/release tooling and test automation, plus strong scripting in Python, PowerShell, and Bash.
  • Experience setting technical standards and influencing engineering leadership on infrastructure investment.
  • Staff-level individual-contributor experience; this is not a people-management role.
Responsibilities
  • Set technical direction for Git and GitHub Actions CI/CD and test automation across multiple game projects, studios, and platforms, including reusable workflow and runner foundations.
  • Define the studio-wide approach to quality gates, engine-integrated testing, and performance and regression automation, including where automation should and should not be applied.
  • Shape engine, platform, and console build pipelines, SDK management, and certification workflows across targets.
  • Identify systemic bottlenecks in build, iteration, and test times across teams, and lead multi-quarter initiatives to eliminate them.
  • Lead large-scale repository and branching strategy, including migrations such as Perforce to Git, and supporting tooling.
  • Lead resolution of complex cross-team build, release, and pipeline incidents, and drive process changes to prevent recurrence.
  • Establish automation standards, review practices, and design guidance for adoption across the organization.
  • Evaluate and recommend CI platform, runner infrastructure, and test tooling investments, including cost and build-versus-buy trade-offs.
  • Mentor senior and mid-level engineers across teams and help shape the automation career ladder.
  • Represent automation and build engineering in cross-discipline planning, translating infrastructure trade-offs for engineering leadership.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with console/platform build pipelines and certification, including devkits and TRC/XR requirements.
  • Experience with engine build tooling such as UAT/UBT, BuildGraph, Horde, or Unity build automation.
  • Godot build or test automation experience.
  • Perforce-to-Git migration experience at studio scale.
  • Experience with distributed build farms and self-hosted runner infrastructure.
  • Experience with other CI systems such as Jenkins, TeamCity, or Azure DevOps, and infrastructure as code such as Terraform.
  • Experience supporting teams across studios and time zones.

What believers are saying

  • Its 2026 pilot plan gives a concrete near-term validation window.
  • Recent hiring in math, product, and AI signals active product buildout.
  • Austin-based recruiting and in-house PR investment suggest management is preparing for launch.

What critics are saying

  • Level has no public funding, pilots, or revenue, so runway looks unproven.
  • The company is still in active development, with pilots only scheduled for 2026.
  • Without school-district adoption, Level becomes another K-8 edtech product lost to incumbents.

What makes Level unique

  • Level is building K-8 adaptive learning around learning science and game systems.
  • It targets students, educators, and parents with one integrated workflow.
  • It is partnering with educators before launch, not shipping a generic content library.
