Requirements
- A high school diploma, General Educational Development credential, or equivalent working knowledge is required.
- National certification as a Practical Radiologic Technologist or limited-scope licensure by the state regulatory agency is required.
- Direct patient-care personnel must demonstrate competent adult, child, and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques through a nationally recognized, standardized, credentialed healthcare provider course every other year.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills are required.
- The ability to manage multiple changing priorities effectively and in an organized manner is required.
- Strong computer skills, including the ability to work with medical software, are required.
- Knowledge as normally obtained through graduation from an accredited Medical Assisting Program is preferred.
- Experience with office medical procedures and treatments and knowledge of insurance, managed care operations, electronic medical records, and scheduling software are preferred.
- Additional related education and/or experience is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Prepare patients for examinations and treatment by taking and recording vital signs, symptoms, necessary measurements, chief complaints, and pain scores, and report relevant changes in patient condition to the clinician.
- Set up, acquire, and process prescribed radiographic procedures within the scope of the license and established policies and procedures, and educate patients and families about procedures and treatments.
- Assist providers with examinations and minor in-office procedures, including taking blood pressure, documenting respiration and heart rate or pulse, taking temperature, performing phlebotomies, ear irrigation, and electrocardiograms, acting as a chaperone as needed, and using universal blood and body fluid precautions and personal protective equipment.
- Prioritize patient flow through the clinical process.
- Coordinate and manage patient care, including pre-certifications, referrals, authorizations, prescriptions, and scheduling for clinic, hospital, and ancillary medical treatments and tests.
- Communicate test results to patients and act as a resource to clinicians to support optimal patient care.
- Administer medications in accordance with established policies and procedures or provider direction.
- Prepare and maintain accurate medical records, including laboratory results, authorizations, X-rays, hospital records, and previous care related to each patient visit.
- Provide complete and accurate information needed for timely billing of patient encounters.
- Maintain a clean and functional environment, including examination rooms and storage areas.
- Clean and disinfect equipment and instruments using appropriate solutions, follow sterilization procedures and manufacturer recommendations, and follow Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines for hazardous substances.
- Perform basic equipment maintenance, coordinate repairs, evaluate equipment quality-control measurements, troubleshoot equipment problems, and notify appropriate personnel to maintain equipment performance.
- Order supplies and stock patient-care areas, and monitor medication, injectable, immunization, and equipment inventory for expirations and recalls.
- Complete required onboarding, orientation, and simulation training activities.
- Coordinate department workflow, examination-room setup and stocking, patient transport, and scheduling with multidisciplinary team members.
- Independently perform prescribed radiographic procedures within the scope of the license and perform medical-assistant duties under provider supervision.
- Interact with physicians, patients and families, regulatory and health agencies, healthcare institutions, community providers and agencies, and staff across departments regarding patient care.
- Prioritize data from multiple sources to support patient and family responses to changes in health status.
- Perform all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, and applicable professional standards.
