Requirements
  • A master's degree from an accredited graduate program in a mental health-related field or social work is required.
  • Current independent licensure is required and must meet state, Commonwealth, or customer-specific requirements, including applicable behavioral health clinician or Licensed Professional Counselor requirements.
  • Clinical work experience is required.
  • The counselor must be willing, with short notice, to accept assignments of undefined periods, including weekends.
  • The counselor must be able to cover full-time assignments lasting from a weekend to two weeks.
  • The counselor must be able to adapt to new working conditions and varying location rules.
  • The counselor must be able to work effectively with minimal instruction and guidance.
  • The counselor must be able to participate in in-services, training, Quality Improvement committees, or other contract activities with minimal notice.
  • The counselor must be able to engage and communicate quickly with military members, spouses, children, students, parents, and co-workers and respond to emergent situations at military installations or in school settings.
  • The counselor must be able to traverse short and long distances, maneuver through rugged or uneven outdoor locations, and work in outdoor weather and other military-base conditions.
  • The counselor may need to comply with site-specific requirements, including providing records of required current immunizations or vaccinations.
  • The counselor must be able to prove United States citizenship and be fluent in English.
  • Advanced knowledge of brief therapy and solution-focused counseling methods is required.
  • Counselors assigned to Child and Youth Behavioral positions must meet the Magellan MFLC Child and Youth Behavioral criteria for experience with children and youth and specialization in child and adolescent development or psychology.
Responsibilities
  • Provide non-medical, short-term, solution-focused counseling to adults, children, and youth of service members, including assessment, brief counseling, consultation, action planning, referrals, and follow-up.
  • Provide support to staff and personnel at child development centers, Department of Defense Education Activity and community schools, youth programs, and summer camps, including parent training and guidance.
  • Provide training and health and wellness presentations and participate in health fairs and other base or installation activities.
  • Enter counselor activity data daily through a smartphone or web application while maintaining service-member and family-member confidentiality and anonymity.
  • Create a confidential, approachable presence on the installation and, for Child and Youth Behavioral counselors, in child and youth settings while following line-of-sight protocols.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with community resources and provide appropriate linkages.
  • Partner with installation points of contact to provide Adult and Child and Youth Behavioral services that address installation or facility needs.
  • Manage duty-to-warn and restricted-reporting situations according to Department of Defense protocol and staff cases with the Regional Supervisor or Regional Director.
  • Communicate with Regional Supervisors and participate in individual and group supervision, sharing information about trends and issues at assigned installations and facilities.
  • Respond to critical incidents and special requests as directed by the point of contact and approved by the Office of the Secretary of Defense program manager.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior military service, being a military family member, or strong familiarity with military culture is desired.
