Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree in Computer Science or a quantitative discipline such as Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics, or Software Engineering.
  • Experience with version control systems, particularly Git.
  • Experience using the R and/or Python programming languages.
  • Familiarity with the Unix command line and high-performance computing environments and/or cloud computing.
  • Full working rights in Australia.
Responsibilities
  • Develop, maintain, and execute bioinformatics pipelines and workflows, particularly for single-cell RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomic data.
  • Contribute to the existing codebase by debugging, refactoring, and enhancing legacy code.
  • Adopt, test, and benchmark analytical packages for incorporation into analyses and standardized pipelines.
  • Track, archive, and actively manage raw and processed data in accordance with established procedures and policies.
  • Provide technical advice to researchers regarding specific research methods, instruments, and analysis tools.
  • Ensure research data is accurate, high-quality, accessible, and compliant with good scientific practice.
  • Communicate experimental results to researchers and collaborators through written reports and visual formats.
  • Assist in preparing research papers and contribute content to grant applications and research proposals.
  • Train students, postdocs, and peers on data collection, specialized tools, and laboratory safety protocols.
  • Manage internal communications, including scheduling team meetings and research presentations.
  • Manage research data and outputs to ensure compliance with open-access requirements of funding bodies and publishers.
  • Balance competing needs and timelines across multiple research projects and external collaborations to meet deadlines.
  • Participate in institute committees, outreach projects, or donor activities.
  • Comply with workplace health and safety policies and the work health and safety management system.
  • Identify, assess, and report operational, financial, and safety risks; follow the Risk Management Framework and suggest mitigation strategies.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of molecular biology, including DNA transcription and translation.
  • Experience analyzing large molecular datasets, such as whole-genome and transcriptomic sequencing data.
  • Experience handling, processing, and interpreting large-scale biological datasets from single-cell RNA sequencing and spatial technologies such as Visium or Xenium.
  • Experience in machine learning, deep learning, and foundational models.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Appreciation of the ethical dimensions of clinical research.
  • Strong written-report and oral-presentation communication skills.
  • Organizational and time-management skills.
  • Commitment to data organization and implementation of quality controls.
  • Interest in understanding how cancers evolve and progress.
