Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • SPD certification is required within 18 months of hire.
  • On-the-job training includes a minimum eight-week concentrated orientation period.
  • The role requires standing for up to four hours per day, up to two hours at a time; walking for up to four hours per day, up to two hours at a time; and sitting for up to two hours per day, one hour at a time.
  • The role requires frequent finger and hand use for data entry, assembling instrument trays, picking items for case carts, and packaging items.
  • The role requires frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds with the upper extremities and frequently pushing and pulling carts weighing up to 200 pounds.
  • Hearing must be sufficient to hear operating equipment above noise levels and to hear alarms and the telephone.
  • Vision must support general, near, and peripheral vision tasks, including detecting defects such as nicks and burrs in instruments.
Responsibilities
  • Retrieve, sort, and decontaminate used materials, instruments, medical devices, and equipment from nursing units, the Operating Room, Emergency Department, Delivery Rooms, Nurseries, Outpatient Departments, and other areas according to established procedures.
  • Perform quality checks for cleanliness, sharpness, and proper functioning of instruments.
  • Perform high-level disinfection on items that cannot be sterilized.
  • Assemble and wrap items in the correct packaging material in preparation for sterilization.
  • Sterilize wrapped and packaged items by steam or ethylene oxide.
  • Prepare case carts for the Operating Room.
