Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree is required.
  • At least two years of experience working as a Child Life Specialist is required, including at least one year in a hospital setting.
  • Certification in Child Life from the Child Life Council and active membership in the organization are required.
  • Knowledge of child cognitive, social, and skills development methods and techniques is required.
  • The ability to provide a supportive and caring environment for children, families, and staff is required.
  • The ability to alleviate stress and anxiety in children is required.
  • The ability to work in a stressful environment is required.
  • The role requires occasional lifting and carrying of up to 50 pounds and the ability to perform the listed clinical and physical activities.
Responsibilities
  • Provide expert child life services that reduce stress and anxiety in hospitalized children and address their emotional, psychosocial, recreational, and health-related educational needs.
  • Act as a resource to child life staff and assist with developing, implementing, and evaluating child life services.
  • Maintain quality standards in child life services and delegate when appropriate.
  • Consult with medical and other healthcare staff regarding patient care.
  • Function as a lead child life specialist for the unit and/or team.
  • Supervise and perform coaching, training, and education for child life specialists, child life assistants, and recreational therapists.
  • Supervise the overall management of playrooms, activity rooms, and classrooms.
  • Build professional relationships with patients, families, hospital staff, community representatives, and visitors, and support families during hospital stays or challenging events.
  • Participate in patient and family teaching about the hospital and medical procedures.
  • Attend workshops, read professional journals, network with coworkers, and provide in-service training for department, unit, and child life staff.
  • Ensure that child life services use evidence-based practice.
  • Supervise therapeutic and diversional play.
  • Assess and prioritize patient needs through chart review, collaboration with staff and coworkers, and direct contact with patients and family members.
  • Prepare children for and assist them during medical tests and procedures through education, rehearsal, and coping-skill practice.
  • Maintain knowledge and mastery of child life theory and best practices.
  • Advocate for patients and families in the medical setting.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree is preferred.
