Requirements
  • An Associate Degree of Nursing is required.
  • A minimum of two years of work experience as a registered nurse is required.
  • Current South Carolina licensure as a registered nurse or licensure in a compact state is required.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification is required, either from the American Heart Association for Healthcare Providers or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider certification.
  • Ability to perform the physical functions of the job, including standing, walking, sitting, bending, kneeling, climbing stairs, reaching, using both hands and legs, performing repetitive motions, and lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects weighing approximately 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Ability to be physically qualified for respirator use and to maintain corrected 20/40 vision is required.
  • Ability to work in a latex-safe indoor environment is required.
Responsibilities
  • Utilize the nursing process to facilitate age-appropriate patient care coordination activities based on individual patient needs in a safe environment.
  • Assess and interpret vital signs and other required body measurements.
  • Assess and document findings from positive required screenings for the individual patient population.
  • Evaluate and document patients’ responses to the plan of care, pain, medication usage, follow-up tests, procedures, and treatments.
  • Coordinate care with interdisciplinary team members.
  • Administer medication to patients and follow rules, regulations, and policies related to medication administration and documentation.
  • Follow clinic-specific medication policies concerning high-alert medications, pain reassessment, standing orders, medication labeling, in-clinic medications, and food and drug interaction education.
  • Complete indicated clinical procedures according to unit and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Assist in developing action plans to increase compliance and implement corrective actions for identified deficiencies.
  • Share skills, knowledge, and strategies for patient care and system improvement with colleagues and other healthcare providers.
  • Document patient teaching in the electronic medical record according to policy.
  • Update clinic-specific education materials.
  • Provide and document education related to the reason for the visit or patient problem, including education about medications given in the clinic.
  • Provide education to patients and families about medications and medication changes.
  • Follow unit protocols for telephone triage.
  • Use electronic medical record phone templates to document patient calls, plans of care, prescription refills, and responses to calls.
  • Refer calls to providers for response or signature when appropriate and within scope of practice.
  • Monitor inbox messages and communicate relevant information needed to coordinate care.
  • Assist with inbox performance management using Epic inbox reporting tools.
  • Complete and coordinate tests and procedures required for individual clinic specialties.
  • Recognize learning needs and obtain appropriate education or training.
  • Recommend improvements to patient care and clinic operations.
  • Encourage and assist the team with safety reporting, investigations, and resolution.
  • Collaborate with the manager to support education and team action plans addressing Accountable Care Organization goals.
  • Coordinate and manage care using analytical reasoning, reflection, rational problem-solving, evidence-based information, and clinical judgment.
  • Assist with developing personal objectives and evaluate practice through discussion with appropriate staff and self-evaluation.
  • Coordinate competency-based orientation for licensed and unlicensed unit staff.
  • Select and roll out annual clinical competencies.
  • Use formal and informal methods to teach.
  • Ensure areas of responsibility adhere to relevant safety, regulatory, certification, and accreditation standards, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration, The Joint Commission, and South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control standards.
  • Use computer-based information for decision support, continuous quality improvement, and professional development.
  • Use appropriate communication channels for problem solving.
  • Contribute to unit development by supporting change and offering suggestions.
  • Demonstrate cost-effectiveness awareness.
  • Adhere to clinic procedures, Medical University of South Carolina policies, and scope of practice.
  • Verify accurate electronic medical record documentation to enhance revenue collection.
  • Serve as a resource to various populations to influence healthcare delivery and policy formation.
  • Participate in direct patient care as needed to maintain clinical skills.
  • Serve as a resource to the manager, lead, and Registered Nurse III.
  • Promote shared governance structures and processes.
  • Promote a positive environment supportive of staff retention.
  • Function as a role model for others and maintain high standards of patient care.
  • Facilitate positive group relationships and promote teamwork.
  • Encourage and assist staff in addressing conflict appropriately.
  • Coach others in resolving ongoing problems and unit issues.
  • Delegate appropriately with defined expectations.
  • Assist with employee rounding and evaluations.
  • Assist the manager with employee disciplinary processes and employee work-improvement plans.
  • Provide coverage during the manager’s absence to address department-specific concerns.
  • Collaborate on clinic staffing schedules and monitor daily staffing levels, call-outs, and float-team support.
  • Assist staff in working required scheduled hours and days in accordance with time and attendance policies.
  • Coordinate employee interviews, orientation, and mentorship in collaboration with the manager.
  • Collaborate with the manager and staff to achieve financial goals, including monitoring charge-capture reports and assisting with timely corrections.
  • Support the manager with leadership applications and projects as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree is preferred.
  • Previous ambulatory experience is preferred.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification is preferred or required if required by the clinic.
