Automakers are entering their decluttering era. Chinese automakers are turning up the heat - and legacy car companies are responding by cutting complexity. Across the industry, auto executives are searching for ways to build vehicles more cheaply as lower-cost Chinese rivals expand into global markets. Their emerging strategy has one thing in common: decluttering. Automakers are pruning overlapping models, building vehicles with fewer parts, sharing more technology and production costs with partners, and rethinking how vehicles move from the design studio to the assembly line. The goal is to lower expenses as legacy car companies simultaneously absorb billions of dollars in EV-related losses, navigate tariffs, and compete with Chinese automakers that can often build vehicles more cheaply. "A lot of automakers are taking a long, hard look at their lineups," Sam Abuelsamid, the vice president of market research at Telemetry, said. "The more different vehicles you have, that adds manufacturing, marketing, and engineering complexity. You've got a lot of different variations of parts to stock in plants. That all adds up." Execs are speaking out. Volkswagen is offering perhaps the clearest acknowledgment of the problem. "We have to tackle the complexity," Volkswagen chief financial officer Arno Antlitz said in a Friday interview on CNBC. "On the customer side, we have too many models." Volkswagen Group, the world's second-largest car company by sales, plans to reduce its global model lineup by as much as 50% by 2030. It also wants to cut product complexity - including the number of variants and powertrain options it offers - by as much as 75%. That comes as VW is facing a year of decline. On Friday, it updated its sales forecast, saying it now expects 2026 deliveries to slip by 3% to 7%. Kenta Kon, the new CEO of Toyota, the world's biggest automaker, has also raised concerns about manufacturing complexity. "If you go to a development division, you see issues such as an increasing number of different specifications and variants being created, which in turn is driving up costs," he told Automotive News. "If there are areas within those activities that aren't truly value-adding work, or where work isn't being done efficiently, then we need to take a closer look at them." Some cars go bye-bye... Automakers have spent years creating slightly different vehicles to pursue ever-narrower market segments, Abuelsamid said. Recent product decisions offer hints of how the industry's decluttering could play out. Abuelsamid pointed to Ford's decision to discontinue the Escape while retaining the similarly sized Bronco Sport. The two SUVs have different styling and target somewhat different buyers, he said, but they also overlap enough to "cannibalize" each other's sales. The same goes for Chrysler's decision to ax the Voyager for 2027 - the company is keeping the higher-priced, nearly identical Pacifica minivan. And some get simpler... Companies are trying to figure out how to build their remaining vehicles with fewer parts, Seth Goldstein, an equity strategist at Morningstar who follows the auto industry, told Business Insider. They have some positive examples. "I think automakers are likely copying Tesla and BYD," Goldstein said. "These companies are selling a lot of cars on the same platform, and they're very profitable. The legacy makers are asking, 'How can we take some of their lessons and simplify the number of parts we need on an assembly line?'" Ford's Universal EV platform is one attempt. The company plans to launch a roughly $30,000 midsize electric pickup in 2027, followed by a family of vehicles built from the same underlying architecture. Ford says the new system requires fewer parts and manufacturing steps than its traditional production process. Ford is not alone. Stellantis and Nissan are developing more modular vehicle systems designed to share components across multiple products. Rivian says its new R2 platform also costs substantially less to build than its original R1 vehicles. Shared components do not necessarily mean identical vehicles: The same architecture can support sedans, SUVs, and pickups with different designs. Still, there is an obvious risk to the whole industry: The great automotive decluttering could make already-similar lineups even more boring. But the payoff, Goldstein said, would be cars that cost less to build - and, potentially, less to buy. "If automakers can offer a more affordable vehicle while getting their costs down to be able to do so profitably," he said, "I think that's still in high demand from consumers." Work at an automaker? The original Alphard rival is back - all-new Nissan Elgrand launches in Japan. Jul 17, 2026 4:53 pm "Alphard killer" this, "Alphard killer" that - but the luxury MPV trend didn't start with the Alphard; it started with the Nissan Elgrand back in 1997, with the Alphard developed in response five years later. Now, after 16 years of the third-generation E52, the all-new fourth-generation E53 Elgrand has finally launched in Japan. First publicly shown at last year's Tokyo Mobility Show, the all-new Nissan Elgrand embodies the marque's "Timeless Japanese Futurism" design philosophy while retaining the model's signature boxy silhouette. Like the Nissan Serena, its light signature is integrated into the front grille, which takes design cues from the traditional Japanese Kumiko lattice pattern - a motif that's mirrored again at the rear in the full-width taillight design. Buyers get five body colour choices. Four are monotone options - Prism White, Shigoku, Dark Metal Grey and Midnight Black - while the fifth is a premium two-tone finish combining two new colours, Fuji Dawn and Shigoku, essentially a bronze-and-dark-maroon combo. Step inside and the cabin gets a proper modernisation, headlined by dual 14.3-inch displays for the digital instrument cluster and centre infotainment screen. The Kumiko pattern makes its way indoors too, showing up on the door trims and seats. The car also features a 22-speaker Bose sound system, complete with speakers built directly into the headrests, while up front there are two Qi2.0-standard wireless fast chargers for your devices. The all-new Elgrand is offered exclusively as a seven-seater in a 2-2-3 configuration. Nissan has thrown in a few comfort-focused touches as well. A smooth stop feature manages braking force to prevent the unwanted jolt when the car comes to a complete stop, while an Advanced Active Noise Cancellation system - a first for Nissan - helps keep the cabin quiet. There are also zero-gravity seats for the middle-row captain's chairs and the front passenger seat, and Nissan says all three can be reclined into their zero-gravity position simultaneously, even while the car is being driven. Being a Nissan, It's got to be plenty practical as well. Three 100V (1.5kW) AC outlets are on available for V2L functionality, and a halfway sliding-door-open feature helps keep rain out of the cabin on wet days - something that could come in handy for Autobuzz here in Malaysia. Nissan also claims it has optimised the boot's opening height and width to make loading and unloading bulky, heavy items easier, though that's something Autobuzz'll have to verify for ourselves. As for safety, the all-new Nissan Elgrand comes equipped with Nissan's latest ProPilot driver assistance system, which supports accelerator, brake and steering inputs during single-lane highway driving. The system can also be had with Navi-link, Traffic Jam Hands-Off Mode and Lane Change Support - enabling hands-off driving in congested traffic at speeds of 50 km/h and below, plus Lane Change Support at speeds of 60 km/h and above. Nissan has still yet to mention detailed powertrain figures but has mentioned it will be runing on its latest third-generation e-Power hybrid system, paired with the upgraded e-4orce dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. It's a similar setup to the one found in the latest Nissan X-Trail e-Power, previewed at KLIMS 2026, which pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine acting as a generator with a 1.8kWh lithium-ion battery and two electric motors, together producing 204 hp and 330 Nm sent to all four wheels. The all-new Nissan Elgrand is priced from JPY6,897,000 (approx. RM174k) for the X e-Force and JPY7,579,000 (approx. RM191k) for the G e-Force. For context, the recently updated Nissan Serena is priced from JPY2,785,200 (approx. RM70k). In Malaysia, the Nissan Serena, launched only with the e-Power powertrain, is priced from RM154,800 on the road and without insurance.

Electrification remains important, but the conversation is no longer focused only on replacing petrol engines with batteries. Today's most significant developments involve intelligent software, flexible powertrains, advanced connectivity and vehicles that continue improving after leaving the showroom. The International Energy Agency expects global electric-car sales to reach approximately 23 million units in 2026, representing close to 30% of new cars sold worldwide. The number of electric models available globally could also exceed 1,100 this year, giving buyers far more choice across luxury, performance and mainstream segments. Recent European figures reinforce this momentum. Battery-electric registrations across major European markets surpassed 1.24 million during the first half of 2026, increasing by more than 30% compared with the same period last year. Government incentives, higher fuel costs and expanding charging networks continue to encourage adoption. However, the transition is not identical in every market. Charging availability, purchase prices and driving habits continue to influence consumer decisions. This is helping hybrids and plug-in hybrids retain an important role, particularly among drivers who want improved efficiency without depending entirely on public charging infrastructure. The rise of the ai-defined vehicle. One of the most important trends of 2026 is the evolution from the software-defined vehicle to the AI-defined vehicle. The car is gradually becoming a personalised digital environment. Profiles can store seating positions, climate preferences, favourite routes and entertainment choices. Advanced systems can also recommend charging stops, identify maintenance requirements and adjust vehicle behaviour according to road or weather conditions. At the same time, data privacy and cybersecurity are becoming critical concerns. Manufacturers must demonstrate that connected features are secure, transparent and genuinely useful rather than intrusive. Technology must still deliver a better Drive. Despite rapid digital development, successful vehicles must still provide comfort, quality, performance and emotional appeal. Buyers may appreciate intelligent interfaces, but they also expect dependable engineering and an enjoyable driving experience. Dacia Striker is a sub-£25,000 family car: Crossover is a jacked up estate - can it win over UK drivers? Updated: 01:00 EDT, 8 July 2026 Dacia is launching a new crossover to take on popular family cars such as the Nissan Qashqai and Skoda Octavia. The Striker, named to convey the idea of 'making a strike' or 'hitting the target', expands Dacia's growing line-up of affordable models. The Romanian value-led carmaker says the car retains 'Dacia DNA' - a rugged tool that is also stylish enough to appeal to leisure users and environmentally conscious buyers. The Striker will 'combine the high driving position and outdoor capabilities of an SUV, the versatility and convenience of an estate, and the efficiency and performance of a saloon', the company says. Dacia is on a crusade to build its reputation in the family car sector, having largely started out selling affordable small cars such as the Sandero. It is aiming to increase its sales in the competitive C-segment from 20 per cent to 33 per cent by 2030, with the Striker leading the charge. Exact pricing has yet to be confirmed, but Dacia says it will start at less than £25,000. Dacia has revealed its new Striker crossover, which will cost less than £25,000. Here's what we know so far about the family car What will the Dacia Striker look like? Dacia wants the Striker to look different to its SUVs and to other crossovers, and so it leans towards an estate in appearance - albeit a raised one. The horizontal flowing body lines are 'inspired by the elegant forms of saloon cars' and the raked windscreen, elongated roofline and rear window also aspire to be estate-like. The taut, contoured shoulder line, raised ground clearance, and strong lower proportions reflect the SUV-side of the crossover - as do the gloss black grille, and integrated roof bars. At 4.62 metres long, it should have plenty of cabin space and luggage room. It too should feel airy inside thanks to its 1.53 metre height, which sits between a traditional saloon car and a fully-fledged SUV. Available in seven colours, you'll be able to get your Striker in two new shades: Frost Green and Cosmic Blue. The Striker's interior is eco-focused and functional. The 10.1-inch screen is standard, as are the physical controls What's the Dacia Striker like inside? There are four Striker trims - more on those later - and all share the same new cockpit concept. The Striker's dashboard continues the car's exterior theme inside, with a distinctive horizontal layout intended to create a sense of space and wraparound comfort. It also features an intuitive three-tier structure designed for maximum functionality. Level One is closest to occupants and focuses on comfort and perceived quality. It is predominantly made of textiles, along with sections of Starkle - a scratch-resistant plastic developed for the Dacia Duster - which wrap around the dashboard. This material has never been used inside a Dacia before and forms part of the brand's 'Eco-Smart' approach. Level Two is more functional and structured, grouping together the most frequently used controls. These controls, much to the delight of analogue enthusiasts, are physical and designed to be operated intuitively so the driver's attention remains on the road. Level Three is set further back and houses the interface and display features, including a 10.1-inch central touchscreen, which is standard across the range and comes with either Media Display or Media Nav Live, depending on trim level. Media Nav Live uses connected navigation with real-time traffic information and map updates. Other interior features are designed to make everyday life easier. These include a cable channel running from the storage compartment opposite the passenger seat to the centre console, helping to keep cables neatly concealed. There is also an ice scraper discreetly integrated into the dashboard and a 6.7-litre armrest compartment, which can be fitted with a sliding drawer. Three new family-friendly features include a water-bottle holder, a blanket that doubles as a child's play mat, and a multi-purpose net that can be used to carry objects or fitted between the front seats. The Striker comes with a 600-litre boot, which can be divided into three sections to separate loads and keep items secure Striker's space, practicality and eco features. Another feature that will make the Striker feel more spacious is the panoramic glass roof, which uses advanced thermal and acoustic glazing to keep the cabin bright, quiet and comfortable on long journeys. There are four trims: Essential, Expression, Extreme and Journey. Essential focuses on value, Expression adds extra convenience, Extreme maximises rugged appeal, and Journey prioritises comfort Striker trims and powertrains. The Dacia Striker is available with a choice of efficient, advanced electrified powertrains. The four-wheel-drive Striker Hybrid 155 combines a 109hp 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, two electric motors and a 1.4kWh battery. Dacia says the combination of regenerative braking, the battery's high energy-recovery capacity and the efficiency of the automatic gearbox means the Striker can operate in all-electric mode for up to 80 per cent of the time in urban driving. There are five driving modes, including Off-Road and Sand, while the Striker also comes with Hill Descent Control. There are four trim levels: Essential, Expression, Extreme and Journey. Essential offers all the essentials, from the 10.1-inch central touchscreen to rear parking sensors. Expression adds a range of useful features, including an electric parking brake and additional USB ports. Extreme is aimed at outdoor enthusiasts and features Copper Brown exterior and interior accents, a panoramic sunroof, washable Microcloud synthetic TEP upholstery, rubber floor and boot mats, a 10-inch digital instrument panel and hill descent control. Journey adds more premium features for longer-distance driving, including heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, Media Nav Live, wireless smartphone charging and an automatic power tailgate. When is it available? The Striker is expected to go on sale in early 2027 after being revealed in March this year. At around £25,000, it's likely to be the cheapest model of its size and in its segment when UK deliveries begin.
