Truist consumer banking chief exits in shakeup as bank sells $7.7B of LightStream loans

Truist consumer and small business banking chief Dontá Wilson is leaving the bank, six weeks into Mike Lyons' tenure as chief executive officer. Wilson was the last executive remaining from the 2019 SunTrust-BB&T merger that created Truist. Shimna Sameer, hired in July to lead wealth management, will take over consumer banking. Jeff Warner, a 25-year PNC veteran, joins as chief small business banking officer, and D. Steve Boland, a former Bank of America executive, becomes vice chair. All three report to Lyons. Truist also agreed to sell $7.7 billion of LightStream loans to Carlyle, expected to generate $7.2 billion in net proceeds. The deal should close in the fourth quarter and exits a non-core business, the bank said.

Rockefeller snags $1.2 billion Truist team in Florida.

Rockefeller snags $1.2 billion Truist team in Florida. October 16, 2026 (L to R) Gordon Kellam, Owen Wilson and Matthew Caras, who joined Rockefeller from Truist in Naples, Florida. Another billion-dollar team has left Truist Bank, this time for Rockefeller Global Family Office. The Kellam Group, which managed $1.2 billion in client assets, joined Rockefeller on Friday in Naples, Florida, according to a source familiar with the move. The team, led by Gordon B. Kellam, Owen M. Wilson and Matthew T. Caras, produced $7 million in revenue, the source said. They moved with support staff Erica Solas, Sumera Yousaf, Brad Cherkin and Charles Outlaw. The group had joined Truist by way of its BB&T predecessor. Kellam, who had been a producing complex manager at BB&T, started his career in 2001 and joined BB&T in 2013 from Merrill Lynch, according to BrokerCheck. Wilson and Caras, who have 14 and 33 years of experience, respectively, joined BB&T in 2017 from UBS and Wells Fargo. Their move extends a streak of departures from Truist. Earlier this month, a 13-person team managing $3 billion in assets left for Captrust Financial Advisors. In September, Rockefeller landed another Truist team with $1 billion in assets in North Carolina. The exits reflect the expiration of retention loans granted around the 2019 merger of BB&T and SunTruist, according to the source and a former Truist advisor who spoke on condition of anonymity. They also cited frustrations over tiered fee increases that advisors were responsible for implementing across client accounts. A Truist spokesperson declined to comment on the departure. For Rockefeller, the hire bolsters a Naples office established in May with a $1.2 billion Morgan Stanley team. The office is part of the southeast region led by Kristen Sario. As of June 30, Rockefeller oversaw $224 billion in client assets across its family office, investment management and investment banking units, according to its company website. Firms will be able to present projected returns as part of an update aimed at harmonizing marketing rules between Finra and the SEC. Oct 16, 2026 Oct 15, 2026 Oct 14, 2026 Oct 13, 2026

Truist CEO shakes up bank's consumer, small business leadership.

Truist CEO shakes up bank's consumer, small business leadership. 10/16/2026 New Truist Financial CEO Mike Lyons revamped the Charlotte-based bank's consumer and small business leadership today and jettisoned one of the key digital initiatives of his predecessor CEO. As part of the shift, Dontá Wilson is leaving the bank, where he has been chief consumer and small business banking officer. The bank also said it planned to sell $7.7 billion of unsecured consumer loans, making up most of its LightStream online banking platform, to the Carlyle Group private equity group. LightStream had been promoted by former CEO Bill Rogers as a key growth strategy. Truist said it hired retired Bank of America executive Steve Boland as vice chair. He will "help advance the bank's strategic agenda and support execution of the highest-priority initiatives," according to a release. Truist also promoted Shimna Sameer to chief consumer banking officer. She is a former Bank of America executive who had been previously named head of Truist Wealth. And Jeff Warner, who has been head of small business at PNC Financial Services Group, was named chief small business banking officer. Warner had worked at PNC for more than 25 years. Boland, Sameer and Warner will report to Lyons. "Truist has all the ingredients to become one of the top-performing banks in the country, and these executive appointments will help ensure we have the leadership depth, organization structure and accountability to execute with discipline," Lyons said in a release. Lyons, who started Sept. 1, was hired to repair the nation's ninth-largest commercial bank, which has struggled to hit performance targets and create a cohesive culture since the 2019 merger of equals between Atlanta-based SunTrust and Winston-Salem-based BB&T. Former BB&T CEO Kelly King and SunTrust CEO Rogers had led the combined company since the merger, and oversaw major changes in the leadership team. Truist shares had slid about 8% since the merger through August, while the KBW Bank Index had advanced about 70% in the same period, Bloomberg News reported. Lyons had been an executive at PNC and Bank of America, and shortly thereafter as CEO at Milwaukee-based Fiserv, before taking the Truist post. At BofA, Lyons was a strategic adviser briefly for CEO Brian Moynihan, gaining a reputation for decisiveness. The appointments "build on Truist's strengths in consumer and small business banking and support the company's continued focus on growing core deposits, deepening primary banking relationships and investing in the capabilities that serve clients," the company said. Wilson has been a longtime star at Truist, having started working at BB&T while a student at UNC Charlotte and rising steadily through the ranks under both King and Rogers. He is an active civic leader in Charlotte, serving as chair of the UNC Charlotte board of trustees. The strategic overhaul came as Truist reported third-quarter adjusted earnings that topped Wall Street expectations, while revenue was short of forecasts. The company said adjusted earnings were $1.42 a share, above the $1.14 estimate, while revenue was $3.75 billion versus the $5.35 billion forecast. Truist shares gained more than 2% in early trading today to about $47.60. It has traded between $41.60 and $56.20 in the past year. David Mildenberg is editor of Business North Carolina.
