Microsoft reportedly weighs 20% Azure cost cuts as AI spending hits $175B

Microsoft is reportedly weighing cost cuts of at least 20% at Azure, its cloud unit. Azure President Girish Bablani asked senior leaders in his roughly 11,500-person unit to find the savings, according to reports. Microsoft denies that Azure leadership has directed teams to develop cost-cutting plans. The reports come as AI infrastructure spending pressures margins. Microsoft expects about $50 billion in capital expenditures for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 and roughly $175 billion for calendar 2026. Demand remains strong. Fourth-quarter revenue rose 18% to $90 billion, and Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 43%. Microsoft shares are up 10% this year.

Microsoft launches Guardian Agents to police AI agents, warning "frontier models cannot be trusted

Microsoft on Monday launched new security features to protect enterprises from AI agents, which it says can act like insider threats. The headline addition is Guardian Agents, which monitors the AI agents a company uses. It is part of Project Perception, introduced in June to counter hacking models such as Anthropic's Mythos and OpenAI's Daybreak. Chief executive Satya Nadella has urged firms to stop relying on model providers' assurances and to separate "the supply of intelligence from the authority over it." Hayete Gallot, Microsoft's security business chief, wrote that frontier models "cannot be trusted" because they are unpredictable. Microsoft Defender can now detect up to 60 types of agents that employees bring to work, including Claude Code, Codex, and OpenClaw. New controls also limit agents' data access and require human approval for risky decisions.

Analyst says Microsoft's Maia AI chips are "nowhere close" to Google and NVIDIA despite $116B capex

Microsoft unveiled its Maia 300 AI chip on Monday and plans to scale Maia to multi-gigawatt deployments starting next calendar year. Chief executive officer Satya Nadella said the chip delivers 40% more tokens per watt than leading GPU-based systems. Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Mandeep Singh was unimpressed. He said Microsoft's chips are "nowhere close" to Google's TPUs or NVIDIA, which leaves Alphabet ahead in the custom-chip race. The stakes are large. Microsoft's capital expenditures rose from $23.9 billion in the year ended June 2022 to $116 billion in the year ended June 2026, while NVIDIA's gross margin has stayed above 70% for three fiscal years. Singh said that without sustained effort, Microsoft will "be reliant on NVIDIA for the foreseeable future.

Microsoft exits Nscale's UK data centre as grid delays push power to the 2030s

Microsoft has pulled out of a planned AI data centre in Loughton, Essex, that British cloud provider Nscale was building for it, Reuters reported on October 18, citing the Telegraph. Microsoft is one of Nscale's two largest customers and declined to comment. The reason for the withdrawal was not specified. Power looks like the problem. Grid officials reportedly told Nscale they did not expect to supply electricity until the 2030s. Nscale says it remains committed to the site and is exploring other power sources. The site was to house about 23,000 Nvidia chips, roughly 11.5% of a 200,000-chip programme. Microsoft's June-quarter cash capital expenditure was $35.80 billion, more than double a year earlier. The exit hurts Nscale more: its IPO filing lists Microsoft agreements worth up to $43.8 billion.

Microsoft shares up 8% as Azure revenue tops $100B, defying AI spending doubts

Microsoft shares have gained about 8% over the past month, even as some investors doubt AI stocks over the high cost of building data centres. S&P Global estimates global AI infrastructure spending could pass $1.3 trillion next year. Microsoft's Azure cloud revenue topped $100 billion for the first time, up 41% from a year earlier. The company said customer demand continues to exceed available capacity, and it expects Azure revenue to grow 45% in fiscal 2027. Microsoft plans to spend about $175 billion in capital expenditure this year, mostly on AI infrastructure. Its Copilot app had 30 million paid subscribers before its latest update, a 50% rise in a few months. Its shares trade at a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 27, against a tech sector average of 33.
