Requirements
  • Five years of related experience and/or training.
  • Experience with structures for bridge and roadway work is required.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence; and speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, and compute rates, ratios, and percentages.
  • Ability to apply common-sense understanding to written, oral, or diagram-form instructions and solve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of the job, including regularly standing, walking, handling materials, reaching, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; frequently working or walking on uneven ground; and frequently lifting or moving up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to meet the job's vision requirements, including close and distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and adjusting focus.
Responsibilities
  • Review documents and plans and resolve questions before proceeding with activities.
  • Examine blueprints, plans, and profiles to determine structure dimensions and road or pipeline grade or profile.
  • Work from surveyor layouts and cut sheets and determine line and grade where necessary.
  • Direct and train the crew to perform work according to contract drawings and specifications and within the job estimate's production budget.
  • Act as the OSHA-defined competent person on the job.
  • Select lumber, forms, and other materials and structural units to ensure they conform to project requirements, and plan ahead to ensure materials are available when needed.
  • Plan the sequence of project activities in a two-week schedule with the Superintendent and Project Engineer.
  • Assign workers to tasks such as operating machinery and equipment, cutting material, building concrete forms, erecting wooden framework, and laying pipe.
  • Inspect subcontractor work for conformance with specifications.
  • Supervise workers building cofferdams, excavation supports, concrete forms, and other structures.
  • Study production schedules and estimate worker-hour requirements for job assignments.
  • Maintain a crew contact list and know crew members by name.
  • Conduct daily crew huddles to explain the work and how it will be accomplished, and train inexperienced crew members.
  • Interpret company policies for workers and enforce and follow company disciplinary procedures when addressing employee problems.
  • Evaluate job safety issues and make changes where necessary; enforce safety regulations and personal protective equipment use.
  • Establish or adjust work procedures to meet production schedules.
  • Recommend improvements to production methods, equipment performance, and product quality; suggest changes to working conditions and equipment use to improve crew efficiency.
  • Analyze and resolve work problems or assist workers in resolving them.
  • Initiate or suggest plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
  • Maintain detailed, accurate time and production records, including verified quantities and work locations, and submit timesheets on time.
  • Keep the job team informed of progress and problems.
  • Estimate, requisition, and inspect materials.
  • Set up machines and equipment and supervise their use.
  • Maintain a detailed daily job diary.
  • Hold a meaningful weekly crew safety meeting and file a report documenting attendance and content.
  • Perform the activities of the workers supervised and minimize the punch list by completing work activities.
  • Direct, coordinate, and evaluate the crew, which may include one Lead Person supervising two to three employees and direct supervision of three to five additional employees.
  • Train employees; plan, assign, and direct work; appraise performance; reward and discipline employees; and address complaints and resolve problems.
