About the Job

Requirements

  • A B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline from an accredited university and 12 or more years of direct experience; advanced degrees may be accepted in lieu of experience.
  • Experience in centrifugal or axial pump design, preferably reactor coolant pump design.
  • Experience applying ASME Section III Code design, preferably with rotating equipment.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience with pump testing or qualification programs.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience of electric motor operation and electromechanical concepts.
  • Technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to coordinate and lead a design team's effort with minimal direction.
  • Ability to handle projects with competing objectives and design constraints and resolve conflicts between objectives.
  • Ability to work on simultaneous tasks requiring a multidisciplinary approach.
  • Experience working to quality standards on design activities, such as ASME NQA-1.
  • A high degree of trust and integrity, open communication, respect, and a desire to foster teamwork.
  • Candidates must meet applicable ANSI/ANS 3.1 education and experience criteria, including relevant nuclear industry experience where required.
  • Ability to perform the described physical actions and working conditions, with or without accommodation, including safely lifting up to 25 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage technical requirements for the Primary Sodium Pump (PSP) and Intermediate Sodium Pump (ISP), including preparing or reviewing design specifications and ensuring correct application of ASME code rules to design and fabrication.
  • Perform technical vendor oversight of the PSP and ISP designer.
  • Review vendor deliverables and perform owners’ acceptance.
  • Support PSP and ISP design by performing thermal hydraulic or mechanical analyses using hand calculations or software-based methods.
  • Lead design reviews for the PSP and ISP.
  • Assist with developing testing requirements and test specifications, and provide technical oversight for PSP and ISP testing.
  • Work with other engineers on physical and fluid interface requirements and design.
  • Coordinate with other teams on analysis results, including thermal, seismic, structural, pipe stress, and heat transfer analyses, and integrate results into plant design and operational decisions.
  • Identify and ensure effective application of correct design codes to plant systems, including ASME, ANS, ASTM, IEEE, and NFPA.
  • Analyze and allocate regulatory criteria and standards to complex mechanical and process system design.
  • Support planning efforts and maintain schedule adherence for design activities within a system and integration with the overall plant design delivery schedule.
  • Interface with the design team to create and manage system design drawing packages, including Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), 3D models, and system interface drawings.
  • Interface with mechanical, instrumentation and controls, civil, and nuclear design disciplines to develop plant design information and specify system design and performance criteria.
  • Establish and maintain system requirements and design basis documents for the primary heat transport system.
  • Propose and initiate testing programs for plant system qualification as needed.
  • Provide support and oversight during test execution, evaluate test results, and report results.
  • Generate design packages for systems, subsystems, and equipment, coordinating calculations, design reports, mechanical drawings, and engineering design specifications.
  • Support licensing activities for the Natrium demonstration project by assisting with preparation of licensing submittals.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in reactor coolant pump design.
  • Experience applying ASME Section III Code design to rotating equipment.

About the Company

TerraPower

Develops advanced nuclear reactors and isotopes

TerraPower develops advanced nuclear technologies to provide carbon-free energy and medical isotopes. The company works on next-generation reactors such as the Traveling Wave Reactor, Molten Chloride Fast Reactor, and sodium fast reactor. Its products generate electricity through fission in these next-gen designs, and the medical isotope work involves extracting isotopes like Actinium-225 for cancer treatment via partnerships (e.g., with Radiopharm). TerraPower generates revenue through technology licensing, partnerships, and supply agreements, serving utilities, government agencies, and medical institutions. The company differentiates itself by pursuing a diverse portfolio of reactor technologies and by combining power generation with medical isotope applications, complemented by collaborations and licensing to bring technologies to market. Its goal is to provide scalable, carbon-free energy while addressing medical needs through isotope production and new reactor deployments.
