Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership and oversight for all clinical areas by assessing acuity of care needs, facilitating patient flow and admissions, and ensuring a safe patient-care environment.
  • Assess acuity of care needs across departments.
  • Assist staff in maintaining a safe work environment for patient care.
  • Oversee care and patient flow throughout the hospital.
  • Provide hands-on care when needed and during departmental surges.
  • Facilitate the admission process and safe after-hours surgical recoveries.
  • Respond to emergencies in all departments and assist as necessary.
  • Help patient-care staff set shift priorities and assess staff and patient requirements through shift huddles.
  • Follow safety and infection-control procedures, intervene in unsafe situations, and meet clinical expectations for individuals receiving support.
  • Communicate effectively with staff through shift huddles, provide clinical guidance, and provide feedback to staff, department directors, and the administrator on call as appropriate.
  • Maintain visibility in all departments by rounding every two hours.
  • Serve as a resource for staff in solving clinical problems and respond efficiently and respectfully to requests for assistance.
  • Provide immediate follow-up, documentation, and communication of incidents to the appropriate department director or administrator on call.
  • Contact department directors for assistance with problem solving when appropriate.
  • Provide support, guidance, and feedback to staff; identify and communicate staff educational needs to department directors.
  • Develop and implement shift staffing plans, with input from team leads, based on patient acuity, census, and available staff.
  • Help staff use staffing resources efficiently to meet patient-care needs and professional responsibilities.
  • Identify or solve administrative and operational problems and manage patient flow and safety throughout the hospital.
  • Work collaboratively with nursing and ancillary staff to resolve issues fairly and consistently.
  • Interpret and ensure adherence to hospital policies and procedures and CMS Conditions of Participation.
  • Obtain materials, supplies, and night pharmacy medications as needed.
  • Contribute to evening and night staff performance evaluations and provide staff-development sessions during shift downtime.
  • Assist staff in interpreting change positively and assist with development of department goals.
  • Lead by example and support organizational policies, procedures, and regulatory mandates.
  • Represent the hospital professionally and communicate its mission and values.
  • Participate in performance-improvement projects, quality-improvement activities, required meetings, and in-services.
  • When practicing as an individual contributor, meet core clinical competencies in patient safety, infection control, patient and family education, quality improvement, documentation, medication administration, intravenous therapy, pain management, the nursing process, and registered nurse leadership.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred.
  • Emergency or critical-care nursing experience is preferred.
  • Clinical management experience is preferred.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification is preferred.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification is preferred.
